Wexflyer Posted 20 February , 2018 Share Posted 20 February , 2018 (edited) I was in Dunmore East this afternoon, and noticed a new memorial at the pier head to the crew of UC-44 who perished at the mouth of Waterford Harbour on the night of 4/5 August, 1917, when their final mine detonated prematurely. The entire crew perished, with the exception of the captain and possibly one other (accounts differ). A memorial consisting of a plaque and stone bench was inaugurated on the 100th Anniversary, 5th August 2017, with a representative of the German Navy in attendance. Talesofaseadog Posted 26 October , 2019 Share Posted 26 October , 2019 I was the lead historian for this event because my son's Great Grandfather was a Salvage Rigger on RFA Racer that recovered the U-boat. Dunmore East is a lovely place.
