deancoles Posted 18 February , 2018 Share Posted 18 February , 2018 Hi , I am researching our village fallen , I have found a lot on our man , but i am looking to findsome background on his regiment etc , especially the last weeks before his death in France , previously he was in Mesopotamia . Can anyone help please .? Percy Millard 56th Brigade RFA B battery no 110285 , he died 23rd May 1918 , France , he is buried at Ecoivres cemetery . Apart from having researched all 31 of our fallen and produced a book to fund the new remembrance book in the church , we hold a service at the local primary school on or near the anniversary , so we like to give the children as much information as possible , this is our 4th year of doing this . Thank you Dean NHG
rflory Posted 18 February , 2018 Share Posted 18 February , 2018 The war diary for 56th Brigade RFA does not mention Millard. It indicates that on 23 May 1918 the brigade was near Liebessart and "Batteries sent one section each to relieve 65th Army Brigade behind Vimy Ridge. The entry for 24 May 1918 indicates that "No. 110285 Gnr. P. Millard and 2620 Gnr. S Hopkins both of B/56 killed in action." On that date B/56 had five guns at S22 a 35.19 and one gun at T19 A 50.80. PRC Posted 20 February , 2018 Share Posted 20 February , 2018 I don't know if this adds much more, but there is an entry in the 1919 Probate Calendar for him - he doesn't appear to have a Soldiers Will. He is buried in Ecoivres Military Cemetery, Mont-St-Eloi and his Grave Registration Report on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site gives the map reference for that as Sheet 51 c F.14.a.4.9 so seems a way back from where those guns were located. May be worth checking the Soldiers Effects Register on Ancestry to see if they have him down as died in a Field Ambulance or Casualty Clearing Station. https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/65799/millard,-percy/ Hope that helps, Peter
Admin ss002d6252 Posted 20 February , 2018 Admin Share Posted 20 February , 2018 Effects register just shows 'in action in France'. He was paid a £12 net war gratuity, so £15 gross. This would give 32 months service and indicate enlistment in the month from 24 Oct 1915 Craig
