ARABIS Posted 17 February , 2018 Share Posted 17 February , 2018 To me it looks like TSS Opawa, [New Zealand Shipping Co.,] of which there were two, 1906-28 & 1931-42. ARABIS.

horatio2 Posted 17 February , 2018 Share Posted 17 February , 2018 (edited) A check of HMS OTRANTO's deck logs places here nowehere near Avonmouth on any 22 March 1915-1918. I think Arabis may be on the money. OPAWA was a New Zealand trooper in 1917 - https://www.flotilla-australia.com/hmnzt.htm#73 Edited 17 February , 2018 by horatio2

Malcolm12hl Posted 17 February , 2018 Share Posted 17 February , 2018 The vessel in question is definitely the New Zealand Shipping Company' OPAWA, built by Denny of Dumbarton in 1906. She was sold off the British flag in 1928 and had a colourful second career as a whale factory ship, first Norwegian and then Japanese. She was eventually sunk by an American submarine in 1943. The initials T.S.S. incidentally simply stand for twin screw ship.
MKC Posted 17 February , 2018 Share Posted 17 February , 2018 (edited) Looks like Opawa to me, too. 22 March of what year, please? (or did I miss that?) Opawa was in Aust/NZ waters in Feb/March 1916, and the Flot-Aust reference given above has her arriving London on 27 March 1917. Called at Avonmouth 22 March? I think TSS may be the abbreviation for Twin Screw Steamer, ie steam powered with two drive shafts & propellers.
