Remembered Today:

Scottish flag on coffin in funeral with military honours ?

Recommended Posts

When Elizabeth Johnston, a QMAAC telephonist from Anstruther, Fife, was buried with full military honours (South African Highlanders firing party; army chaplain etc)in St Severs on 30 December 1918, her coffin was brought to the graveside covered with the Scottish saltire (in conformity with her wishes.) How unusual was it for the Scottish flag to feature in a British military funeral like this?

Don't know how prevalent it was then, but it still continues to this day.  A google search turns up many articles and photos relating to the death and funeral of PTE Kevin Elliott (2009 Afghanistan) : -

I don't see why it would be considered unusual.
