Remembered Today:

East Riding Yeomanry portraits

Recommended Posts

The first batch of just under 50 portraits of ERY men from the period 1903-1918 have gone online today at -

https://www.flickr.com/photos/humbermuseums/albums

These are the men whose surnames begin with A or B. More to follow over the coming months. I've tracked down maybe 300 in all from various museum / archive collections and from family sources. Some are more definitely identified than others. If anyone has any further information or additional images, please let me  know.

Full database and other material to follow in due course.

Now featuring surnames A-G, with around 115 images uploaded to date. Always keen to add more material if anyone has images of ERY men I've not seen yet.

Great site but how can you search for a name?

I don't think you can search within the album unfortunately, it's just in alphabetical order (roughly speaking). There are some additional ones which will go on as a final batch after the Y's- no Z's at all sadly.

When my ERY database goes live shortly (on the East Riding Museums website), there's a column that indicates whether there is a known image of the individual, though this does include some I've not not been able to upload due to copyright issues.

Thanks David I think I have found a way by just holding the picture and it brings up the details.

Is ERY and East York’s Yeomanry the same regiment?

if it is looking for an image of

Pte 1668 Harold Keller

2nd/1st EYY from Withernsea who died at home 28/11/1915.

if you ever come across this gent please let us know

Great great site

Hi

Sorry, haven't been on for a while due to various commitments. Yes I have him in my database (a private, born Hull, 1893), though sadly no image known at present. I note he died at home on 28/11/1915 and is commemorated on a war memorial in Withernsea. Any idea about cause of death at all?

There are some variations in the regiment's name depending on the time period - they were the ERIY (Imperial Yeomanry) for a while. East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry is also seen, but did not last long - after all there aren't any other East Ridings to get confused with.

Hi no can’t find an image either and having trouble with how he died. Nothing in any paper either. If I do eventually find something will let you know

Mate,

Can you confirm the details on this man you have with his photo

Agershow    Christian    2214    Pte    reported WIA 19-4-17 on Ali Muntar Hill Tos possibly 10Co date? ICC Ex 1/1 East Riding Yeo (2214) and Corps of Hussars (231878)

I have him possibly ToS 10Co ICC around May 1916

Clearly that must be wrong if he was wounded on Ali Muntar April 1917?

What details do you have on his wounding?

By the way did you find a photo of his man?

Ashlin    C.H.N.        Lt    Tos 10Co 5-16 (commanded East Riding Sect) to T/OC 10Co (from Bardwell) 8-16 shown WIA 11-8-16 at Bir el Bayud (in Inchbald's book) to 2-17 Ex 1/1 East Riding Yeo (2876) to RAF

Cheers

Hello Steve

Information on the wounding was from a relative, so based purely on family tradition I think. There does as you say seem to be a contradiction there - unless he returned to the ERY after being in the ICC (but I've not come across any instances of that happening).

Lt. Charles Harry Norman Ashlin (1892-1974), born Rio Grande, Brazil. Inns of Court OTC, joined the ERY in October 1914, then the ICC, later a Wing Commander in the RAF. There is an image of him in RAF uniform on an ancestry family tree, but I've not found a WWI period image of him.

Mate,

Thank you thats fine, also thanks for the details on his name. The medal index cards just didn't give what CHN was.

Hello Steve

Can probably confirm most of those for you; bear with me, I'm waiting for my full database and narrative to go live on our website and then I'll make it available elsewhere.

We don't have any ICC newsletters, but East Riding Archives (also in the Treasure House at Beverley) do - there is a nominal roll for 10th Company ICC in issue no. 71 (summer 1981), which also tells you which units the men came from. Document reference is DDYC/1/1/8. I've noticed there are quite a few errors in Barak in terms of the service numbers and names, so you definitely need to cross check with medal cards etc.

Mate,

I know its a lot to ask but can you send me a copy of that 10th Company List as I don't have issue No 71?

Either here or via the message board or EMail would do?

Cheers

The 'T's' are now online in the usual place. Two more batches to go - U/V/W/Y's next, then various 'extras' that I overlooked or that have come in since I started.
