PhilB Posted 3 January , 2005 Share Posted 3 January , 2005 Back in the 70s, I used to have to make a 60 mile round trip to Manchester Library to check in their copies of Soldiers Died. A friend had copies of the Thiepval Memorial register and that was worth a check. Then in the mid 70s my local library agreed to buy copies of the microfilms of the casualty lists and things improved markedly. One could also buy, from non-official sources, photocopies of certain regiments` lists, though these were often copies of copies of copies (and so on) and barely legible. The temptation was to buy all the sets offered, check them out and then try to sell back the non-casualties. Of course, virtually all dealers claimed sets to be totally unchecked, (a less than truthful dealer is not a new phenomenon!) and selling a non-casualty was not easy. Its only attraction was that it wasn`t burdened by a death plaque! Did any other old chap have similar problems? Phil B

HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 3 January , 2005 Share Posted 3 January , 2005 Photocopies*,Local Libraries that entertained Medal researchers I wish!! Way back when a 1914 Star Trio would cost you 7/6d if you wanted to check for a Casualty it meant an SAE to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission,,a wait of around three weeks & hopefully a reply that confirmed your thoughts,They were always extremely helpful & many of the staff must have stayed there for many years as I have letters signed in the 60s from folk that were there still in the 1990s;Ahh such sweet memories * I too have a couple of those dreadful photocopies,RAMC & RASC; half the pages are Blurred & worse than useless, cost me a small fortune @ the time too! PhilB Posted 3 January , 2005 Author Share Posted 3 January , 2005 Aye, it were rough in them days, HB! Another option was to phone CWGC. I used to phone at lunchtime when their boss was out. Which was handy because I could phone from work when our boss was out!
