russtobin Posted 16 February , 2018 Author Share Posted 16 February , 2018 I'd assumed January to March for basic training and then joins the battalion for active service leaving the UK in April.
russtobin Posted 16 February , 2018 Author Share Posted 16 February , 2018 Could be something to do with the fact that the Star Medal wasn't originally going to be awarded to anyone serving in the Gallipoli campaign - they were to get the Gallipoli Star. This was later overturned after protests from members of parliament.

Most likely the battalion was already full when it went out so the training continued until they needed a reinforcement draft sent out. There was no absolute rigidity to the timeings, it fitted whatever the Army needed it to. Craig
russtobin Posted 16 February , 2018 Author Share Posted 16 February , 2018 Looks like you're right again Craig - war diary confirms "199 other ranks joined from England on the 17th July 1915" this matches the medal card date of entry therein exactly. Lack of other evidence means the soldier must have been held in reserve in the UK between enlistment and deployment. Thx Russ
