Born c1874 In Sheffield (Hallam). Birth reg 2nd quarter 1874.  1881 and 1891 census in Sheffield. 1881 as a scholar and 1891 as a carter.

Enlisted in Y&L regulars in 1895 (though previousy in a Vol Battalion). Served in Mauritius, South Rhodesia and India. Number 4209

Marries Eunice Mabel Lawrence in Deesa, India 26/6/1901. All overseas service with 2nd battn Y&L. Reserve 1903-11. Sgt on discharge.

1911 census in Sheffield with wife and 3 children, 2 daughters and a son. Postman. Found another record showing him as postman in 1908.

12 Y and L formed in Sheffield Sept 1914. Given his number 12/4 - number 4 12th battn suspect that is hen he joined up.

Medal index card shows just British War and Victory pair. So did not serve abroad in WW1 before 1/1/1916

LongLongTrail says 12th Battn went to Egypt in Dec 1915 and France in March 1916.

His son Harold dies 23/5/16 aged 10.

His death on 1/7/16 is presumed - i.e. last seen alive on that day. Effects to his widow Eunice M. War Gratuity £15. Will have to calculate if that confirms enlistment date. On Thiepval Memorial.

Cannot see any surviving WW1 service papers
