ROD operations in the Middle East - Help!

I am trying to help a chum who found a family album recently.  Here are three photos taken in the Middle East, one showing what looks to have been a head-on collision between two trains.  Any help or knowledge about these would be appreciated.

Middle East covers a lot of ground; did this chum's forebear serve in the EEF or Mespot?

Any further details of his service (eg dates and/or regiment?) might help

OK, thanks to those who have supplied information..... it appears to be the Oases Railway that features in two of the images..... I have now scanned a few more, including another of the crash which supports my theory that it was a collision.
