Mercian Volunteer Posted 2 January , 2005 Share Posted 2 January , 2005 Can some Manchester pal please give a potted history of the action as to why the 11th Manchester Regiment took so many casualties on the 17 Aug 1917 at Ypres. My interest is that of Private Stanley Thomas Orme of Macclesfield whose name is recorded on the Christ Church Memorial Macclesfield. Any info around this date would be most appreciated. Glosters Posted 2 January , 2005 Share Posted 2 January , 2005 Battle of Langemarck 16-18th August 1917 "The 11th Manchesters suffered heavily from fire on their way up to the Northumberland Fusiliers. After crossing the Steenbeek they came under heavy fire from Maison du Hibou. Still under fire, a defensive flank was formed. The remainder of the Battalion came under fire from Bulow Farm." John_Hartley Posted 2 January , 2005 Share Posted 2 January , 2005 Mercian (Steve - that is you, isn't it?) There's an unpublished battalion history at the Regimental Archives (currently shut until around Feb) that may expand on it. I think Croonaert may have a photocopy of most of it. CROONAERT Posted 2 January , 2005 Share Posted 2 January , 2005 I think Croonaert may have a photocopy of most of it. I have, but unfortunately I've only got it up to 31st July 1917 (my "interest" in the 11th Bn. was KIA on 7th June 1917) and am therefore missing the last 20 pages or so. I am hoping to get the remainder of it in a few weeks though. (How long have I been saying that? ) Dave.
