andrew pugh Posted 28 January , 2018 Share Posted 28 January , 2018 Good Afternoon All I have been trying to find information about 2nd Lt William Neate who listed as missing/killed on the 25/03/1918.The only info I have is that he served with the RASC with a service number SS/7717 he was then promoted to acting Sergeant and was commissioned into the 6th Battalion Royal Fusiliers on the 26/06/1917. He was serving with the 24th Battalion at the time of his death. I would like to try and find out where he came from what battalion he was in within the RASC. Just as a matter of interest what does SS mean as a prefix to his service number? I hope someone can help. Kind Regards Andy

Admin ss002d6252 Posted 28 January , 2018 Admin Share Posted 28 January , 2018 SS/7716 attested 20 April 1915 After Neate's death there was a war gratuity of £15 10s paid to his family for service in the ranks. As a Sergeant this would indicate he received £8 basic for the first 12 months and then 10s per month. The £15 10s would give 27 months service which ties in with an enlistment in the month from 27 April 1915. Craig
