Guest Posted 26 January , 2018 Share Posted 26 January , 2018 (edited) Can anyone help me identify my great-grandfather's Scottish regiment? George Donald Wilson (His mother, Mary Hosie Wilson, never married, so there is no record of his father's name.) b. January 29, 1895 in Banff, Scotland We have been told that he was a batman and worked with the officers' horses. Based on his place of birth I suspect he was recruited by the Gordon Highlanders, but in all my research I have not been able to confidently confirm this. He survived the war and later immigrated to Canada. Edited 26 January , 2018 by Guest
FROGSMILE Posted 26 January , 2018 Share Posted 26 January , 2018 (edited) Looks like Gordon Highlanders cap badge to me. Edited 26 January , 2018 by FROGSMILE
gordon92 Posted 26 January , 2018 Share Posted 26 January , 2018 I would concur, Gordon Highlanders. The sporran is quite strange and without tassels. It was probably provided by the photographer.
Guest Posted 26 January , 2018 Share Posted 26 January , 2018 Yes @gordon92 - that's what threw me off as well. I am very new to this type of research, so I didn't realize that perhaps the photographer provided the sporran. Now I know! Thank you!
FROGSMILE Posted 27 January , 2018 Share Posted 27 January , 2018 (edited) The photographer providing the sporran is not a given Caitlin, but conjecture. In the rush to war all sorts of obscure stock was used for auxiliary units and only regulars were clad strictly to regulation as a matter of course.
