Can anyone help me identify what unit my relative is a part of?  It has me puzzled, i see nothing with a number two in his military records book i found in the german archives.

The only unit I know from Metz with a "2" on the shoulder is a battailion of the KB Foot Artillery Regiment 2.

Grey C is absolutely right.

But in Bavaria the number stood before the unit, so

Königlich-Bayerisches 2. Fußartillerie-Regiment.

That's a great photograph, and to judge from the size of that button - is it a Wappenknopf? - on his collar he is a Sergeant or above, I think!

Hello Julian!

The absence of the Collar-NCO-braids indicates him as an Obergefreiter (if it is a NCO button). Obergefreiter was a special rank, only existed in Fußartillerie. In english it would be "Bombardier of Foot-Artillerie"
