Looking for info on the above distant relation.

Stephen served as a Company Sgt Major, (Sce No 9878)1st Battalion Welsh Reg in 1912 in Egypt. In 1915 he was a Lieutenant with the 2nd Battalion in France from 1915.

I have a membership with Ancestry but I can only view his records through Fold3 which I do not have a subscription to. So if there is anyone that has access to these records  it would be very much appreciated.

Hi EWG,

You should be able to see his Medal Index Card and Medal Roll entry on Ancestry without the need to go via Fold3 (They will be Army list entries.)

There other records out there for him.

On Forces War Records there is Transcribed medical report from No 2 General Hospital.

Surname: Oates

Age: 36

Index Number of Admission: 5156

Rank: Private

Service Number: 9878

Years Service: 18 years

Months With Field Force: 2 months

Ailment: "Gunshot wound, arm and t."

Date of Admission for Original Ailment: 28/03/1915

Number of Days Under Treatment: 2

Number/Designation of Ward: Quai.

Notes written in the Observations Column: Hospital Ship Asturias.

Religion: Church of England

Regiment: Welsh Regiment

Battalion: 1st Battalion

Other unit info:B Company

There perhaps a couple of transcription errors here, Private for Rank, as the WO casualty list for April 1915 has him a CSM, also years in service is incorrect, as his service number is 1908 one.

His seniority date on Commission appears to be 30th July 1915. He also appears in a couple of 1915 Newspaper articles in Find My Past.

Is MIC is annotated EM, indicating a Mention in Dispatches, in fact he was Gazetted twice.

22nd June 1915 as a CSM, LG 29200 page 5997

6th Dec 1916 as a 2nd Lt (Temp Capt), LG 29851page 11937.

The Temp Capt would suggest that this is his file at The National Archives.
