Guest Posted 10 January , 2018 Posted 10 January , 2018 Hi, has anyone come across any information of 3 brothers that are on the Carnarvon, Carnarvon shire War Memorial. ( John Roberts, William and Robert) there is a very small mention in the local paper in 1918. The Carnarvon & Denbigh Roll of Honour says the all served with S.W.B.. John is the only one that appears on C.W.G.C. the other brothers I think were with the Devon's. Any info much appreciated. Draig.
John_Hartley Posted 10 January , 2018 Posted 10 January , 2018 (edited) Welcome to the forum. You note that John is commemorated by CWGC but are you saying that the other two are not - but that they did die in the war? . May I ask how you've established that? I have it in mind that there are nearly 400 men with the initial W and nearly 200 with the initial R and I'm curious to know how you've managed to eliminate them all. Whilst I know that a relatively small number of men killed during the war were missed off the official commemorations, the In From the Cold Project (of which I'm a founder member) has cross-referenced the register of overseas military deaths and the Soldiers Died in the Great War records (well over a million entries) against the CWGC database and, subject to human error, we think we have identified all those missed. If men died after being discharged from the army, they will not have been picked up by this exercise. Also what's the evidence for thinking these two were with the Devons? Ron da Valli Posted 10 January , 2018 Posted 10 January , 2018 On Caernarfon memorial is 12983 Private William Roberts 9th Devonshire Regiment. Missing presumed dead on the 30th September 1915. Commemorated on Loos Memorial. He was born in Caernarfon in 1883 and lived with his parents Edward & Jane at Cefn-Y-Fford, Penisarwaun. He enlisted in Ferndale, Glamorgan. There are 3 John Roberts listed but none seem to match your criteria. There is a Robert Roberts but he was born in Wrexham and to different parents. Maybe the other 2 survived the war.
Guest Posted 11 January , 2018 Posted 11 January , 2018 Hi, thanks for your work...guys.......... I have found I have (4) William Roberts SN 22569....,12427..,S/9668..,11117...who were born in Carnarvon. I have eliminated12983 through the local papers. I have (3) Robert Roberts SN 14169..,23815.., and 204476..... in the local paper it says that all 3 brothers were in the S.W.B It looks to me they were all working in the pits in South Wales and that the local paper got it wrong, its happened during research before. I'm convinced there is a connection with these brothers especially the ones who joined up in the Coal mining areas. I just cant proof it.
