The following article appeared in the Dundee Courier - 04.01.1916

The two men killed were

Walter Newel, L/Cpl No. 1765
James Willis, L/Cpl. No. 2551

Fred Deane Pte. 2092 and Alister Macdonald Piper 2126 were MiD.

Jack Jenkins Pte. 1377 won the DCM

I have found two references on the web to Andrew Majury, Pte., Black Watch of Castle Lane, Belfast who enlisted in the 6th Black Watch, September 1914, and is listed on the Belfast Municipal Workers Roll of Honour. However, the only Andrew Majury for whom I found a MIC/Roll was in the RAMC?

Hi,

if you check the medal rolls you will find an A. Majury number 311132 recorded who previously served in R.Highls as Private 2121. Could this be your man?

All the best

Thanks Gordon, that'll be him.

I think that is your man, but there seems to have been considerable confusion!

On ancestry for him there are:

2 X 1914-15 Medal Roll entries, including the one mentioned in post #2 which is actually scored out as "Entered in error"

1 X BWM & VM Medal Roll entry (no mention of Black Watch)

1 X Medal Rolls Index Card (No Mention of Black Watch)

1 X Silver War Badge Register entry (Scot Horse M B F A)

He enlisted on 12 September 1914 (SWB)

Arrived in France 2 May 1915 (MRIC)

Discharged 23 January 1919 (392 XVI) aged 30 years and 8 months) (SWB)

Thanks, confusion indeed. I had missed the 1914/15 Roll mentioning Royal Highlanders.

He was born 24th April, 1888 at 19 Castle Lane, Belfast - still residing there 1911 census. So the age ties.

MIC states entered France 2/5/1915 which is when the 6th Black Watch arived. Enlistment in September, 1914 also correlates.

Strange he wasn't awarded medal or MiD given the report.

I think Crome is actually Frederick William Cronne who was also from Belfast, as were Deane, Newel, Willis and Jenkins.

From an action in July 1915 to a DCM LG date of March 1916 seems a long time for the award to come through. But I maybe wrong as my knowledge of the DCm is not great. Still seems a well deserved honor.

There is an account of the incident in the Perthshire Advertiser of 21 July 1915. (Also the Scotsman of the same day.)
