Does anyone have any information on John at all
dgibson150 Posted 6 January , 2018 Posted 6 January , 2018 Maybe you should first read the guidance notes for researching a soldier on the parent site, The Long, Long Trail, here. Also, I think you would get more response from the Forum if you posted your request under the "Soldiers" subsection, including the name and regiment in the title, something like "Help requested on John Bolam, 3445 Northumberland Fusiliers". Also in the text it is better to include as much "family tree" information that you have on John Bolam, ie dob and place of birth. I have a lot of NE Bolams in my tree, so I am quite interested to know who John Bolam MM was. David
ss002d6252 Posted 6 January , 2018 Posted 6 January , 2018 Quote he was a LCpl at Depot but discharged a private why Lance Corporal wasn't a rank at that time, his substantive rank was Private with an appointment as a Lance Corporal. Craig
John_Hartley Posted 6 January , 2018 Posted 6 January , 2018 The details of his wounding and his various change of battalions would be in his service file, assuming that it survived a fire in the 1940s (only about a third did survive). If it exists, it will be available for download on the National Archives website as well as Ancestry and Find My Past You would find what the battalion was doing on the day he undertook his act of bravery in its war diary (also available from the Archives, Ancestry, etc). It probably will not mention him by name but you should get a broad idea what was happening. The suggestion, at post #3, to read the guidance is the best suggestion you're likely to get on this forum.
helpjpl Posted 6 January , 2018 Posted 6 January , 2018 John Bolam 1891-1971. Lots of information on his military service on family tree on ancestry - including link to/and extracts from 9th Northumberland Fusiliers War Diary. JP
dgibson150 Posted 6 January , 2018 Posted 6 January , 2018 Great to get so much information so quickly. Not one of my Bolams I think. David
