Finding Maurice HUNT

I am hoping someone can advise me where to look first on this one.

Maurice Victor French HUNT born Tiverton Devon 25/1/1896.

These are the facts I have from family:

He lied about his age to enlist.

He was in France then sent to IOW to a hospital had some kind of back injury and suffered shellshock....once recovered from the injury we think he remained at the hospital working rather than going back to the front.

He was in a Territorial unit.

He was part of a unit at Dawlish in ww2 on a gun emplacement (not particularly relevant to this forum, I know, but I thought I'd mention it in case it might help in identifying his ww1 unit)

He was a trained electrician and worked post war as a chauffeur (I don't know if that might give a clue to those who know more about the regts)

I would have though initially he'd have been in the Devonshire, as that's where the other family members I have identified were.

I searched the mic, with the thinking that with such uncommon middle names he'd be easy to find, but there are 3 Maurice HUNTs, no middle name.

They were with the Worcester Regt, Army Service Corps, South Staffs Regt. All were Privates (and I'd have thought with his age, Maurice would not have had the opportunity to progress beyond that rank).

Working on the assumption that one of these is my man, would anyone have any idea how to narrow down the search without having to pay for 3 mics?

Or would a download of one give me all 3?

I don't have cash to waste, and whilst I am drawn to the ASC, I don't want to rule out Geographically based regts, as I do know that there were men who signed up for regts away from their locale.

Would there be a way to find out if either the Staffs or Worc Maurice HUNT signed in Tiverton, or is there something in the fact I have given that will rule out any or all of the men listed?

The mic data from the search page is:

Maurice Hunt, Worcester Regiment, 66716, Private

Maurice Hunt, Army Service Corps, 03714, Private

Maurice Hunt, South Staffordshire Regiment, 42151, Private

Thanks in advance to all!

Tonia, I would not bother downloading the MICs just yet - even though they may well all be on one sheet. They are unlikely to give you additional information that would confirm which one is "your" man.

A better bet may be to contact the Ministry of Defence. As it seems that Maurice served in WW2, his service papers (including WW1 period) may still be held by them.

The address to contact is

Army Personnel Centre,

Historical Disclosures,

Mailpoint 400,

Kentigern House,

65 Brown Street,

Glasgow G2 8EX

If you look that up on the MOD website you will also see that it is possible to phone first.

Hi Tonia

Scrolling down on the mic entries you will see that the reference number for the South Staffs & Worcs are the same meaning that these two are on the same sheet (116889/17299) but the ASC reference is for the next page (116889/17300). At least this means only 2 downloads as opposed to 3

Thanks to both of you for the replies.

Chris, I will contact the MOD first, and see if they hold anything.

Thank you for the info on the numbers, Steve, I had wondered if there was a way to tell before downloading.

Tonia.
