Dear Michelle

Many thanks for your guidance.

One of the areas I would like to pursue  in respect of my Great Uncle is that his widow Minnie Gertrude, who died in 1940,  left a Will by which she bequeathed the bulk of her estate to her daughter Iris Mercy Shuttle Chalmers. I have tried to identify what happened to her and have searched I of Wight records to see if I could find any mention of her. It is possible that she was Francis' daughter.  In 1940 she was living at 38 The Crescent Netley Southampton? Not strictly a WWi issue but would love to find out.

Any suggestions.

Michelle, thanks. Still in the land of the living and monitoring things! Chaucer has pm'd me so will reply to him directly as many of the questions look to be more general.

Robert,

The GRO Birth Index shows that Iris Mercy Shuttler (NB spelling) Chalmers was born in the first quarter of 1922 and the birth was registered in Southampton (Volume 02C  Page 115). No mother's maiden name is recorded.* She could not therefore have been Francis's child. Is it possible that she was Minnie's niece or other relative of Francis?

John

*Edit: That's true of the official GRO Index Database entry. The Ancestry.co.uk version of the Index shows the maiden name as Chalmers

PS It is extremely unlikely that Minnie remarried as her Probate entry states she was a widow and her surname is Chalmers
