Prussian P8 loco, note the short - arg, again Julian please I need better resolution - directorate designation beneath the "2404" which should say either "Cöln" or "Essen".

Smokebox hatch says "Se" for Sedan depot

Background shows a Bavarian loco

The (Sedan)- Mohon depot belonging at time of WW1 picture-takings to Eisenbahndirektion II was twice destroyed, first time in November 1918 and May 1944 by Brit air raid and rebuilt. Today it serves as a RR museum.

Depot Mohon with Prussian G7.1 or G7.2 loco. If I only had better resolution: if at top of smoke box this may be the round shuttle jig -system Dultz- it is a Prussian G7.2

... First picture: this loco is a Belgian series 10 version.

The long boiler - darn Julian I need better resolution pics - shows a German class designation S08/ identure number.

Absolutely revealing is the other marking. It says "MA Sedan".

"SE" stands for Sedan

For all the following images it is suggested with a high probability of certainty that all images are indeed taken in/at depot Sedan-Mohon.

Heck, never realised you were a train buff as well! I'll try for better resolution but this is a post card. I had not noticed the 'MA SEDAN' which is indeed followed by what looks to be a 5 digit number I read as starting '98, then ?, then possibly '51' or '31'.

Even with a 6 x glass cannot read the designation if you mean what is on the number plate directly below the number - but looks too short to be Essen, and so Coln is probable

Certainly a round steam dome behind funnel on the front locomotive - how does one identify a shuttle jig -system Dultz?

Thanks again for modern images!

Thanks for modern and 'ancient' images, Egbert. I was born and grew up in a junction town - Didcot...

Thanks yet again Egbert - and glad to have made you happy! A normal working day here of course... I still await the book you recommended (ordered it for our university library for probable summer reading - a tad too expensive for a personal purchase!), and I really look forward to getting own to the nitty-gritty with all of this.

I should be meeting my batgirl tomorrow between classes - she is somewhat unreliable owing to her course demands - and then will look at what scanning facilty she has found. I guess that eventually I will have to get all of the album done as well as the maps and these loose ones.

So, what iare your thoughts on the loose ones and the likely but unproven connection to the album?

Hm, "ours" is Kodeis B , the loose pictures obviously originate from Reserve-Eisenbahn-Bau Kp 16 which belongs to Kodeis A, but served for some time in Alsace under Kodeis B.

So-----either Kodeis B "inherited" the pictures for his own collections or your Turks visited  Kodeis A as well?

Inspred by Egbert I went back to 'The Little Engines That Could' in no.2. The plate on the side of the first locomotive says: "LORDONBAHN / 90" or "98", the second locomotive looks to be "435" but possibly "455"

That's interesting! It is a bu**er getting information from the dealer... He has a pair of Prussian major's epaulettes on sale which I suppose could be from the "Herr Major" of the album - and I wonder if he is trying to lead me on to buying those before revealing more. But at TL 1,000 and so EU 205, well overpriced and I certainly can't afford them - if still available!

Now, the Bayr.Eis.Betr.Komp.4 also have the same pencilled annotation 'MUS' on them... There are 35 or so of these, mainly 'scenic' shots of damaged buildings, damaged railway waggons, etc., with no locomotives, if I remember rightly - but one of a railway Kannone. But, let's get these album ones and the loose ones sorted out before I post those - on a new thread!

Hi,

just chanced upon this thread. Great photos and a great job by egbert and anybody involved to identify the objects in them!

Welcome Grey C!

The Album was an amazing find and I am enjoying bits of spare time going through it - greatly helped, of course, by Egbert who seems to know the area like his own back garden!  I still have to work on those Ottoman officers and also get the letter to the anonymous "Herr Major" sorted out - I have the gist of it, and love the way it is so respectfully phrased, as appropriate from a Hauptmann to a Major.

Ok, back to basics in a way. Here is the letter at the end of the whole album, 06 June 1918.

Grey C in a PM has offered this transcript and I have tried my translation of this - boots, etc., to be thrown at him for the first, and rotten tomatoes at me for the second. Seriously, comments more than welcome - Egbert, if you have a chance?

Transcript:

"Hoch Verehrte Herr Major!

Translation:

"Highest respected Herr Major!

I hereby send you the group of ‘snaps’ I promised you as a memento of the visits you made to my area in the hope that you will get some pleasure from these.

At the same time, allow me, Herr Major, to offer my sincerest thanks that you have had the goodness to propose me for an Ottoman award. Your award will be extremely pleasing; I will always wear it with great pride as a valuable reminder of the gentlemen's visit [to my area]. I sincerely hope that the petition you have provided is successful, and that the award ‘we’ are most looking forward to will soon be received.

With the wish for a good time on the course of the journey and soon a happy reunion in Karlsruhe

I greet your esteemed sir most sincerely,

Goswin von Haag

Captain and commander of the railway troops in the area of Army Department B"

So, the album belonged to a Major who is presumably featured in the photographs, and our Goswin is petty desperate for an Ottoman award...!!! Links up, then, with the Prussian Major's epaulettes I saw on sale in the same shop...???

Julian

PS: Thanks Grey C!

  • 2 months later...

Gosh, time has flown since I was last able to do something with this! But I have now a copy of Kriegsbahnen im Oberelsass. 1914 - 1918, which I have managed to dip into -and with exams, grading and students dealt with, and a break before summer school - and 100 years ago to the week of the album - so here are some better resolution copies of some of the photographs therein plus the extras, which I trust will make Egbert at least a little happy!

I'll just free-post, as some of these are quite large...
