Anthony Langan - Manchesters

Morning all. Mrs Maldon bought me some medals for Christmas. They are a 14 Star and BWM (VM missing) to an Anthony Langan of the Manchester Regiment. this is what I have found out about him so far:

Born in 1889 in Ardwick, Manchester. The son of Anthony Langan (a labourer from County Mayo, Ireland) and Mary Langan (from Dublin, Ireland) of Audenshaw, Lancashire.

1891 – living with parents and older brother (Thomas) and uncle (Michael) at 153 Cheltenham Street, Harpurhey, Manchester.

1901 - no trace?

1911 – living with his mother at 16 Howard Street, Audenshaw. Worked as a Furrier (Felt Hatting).

Enlisted at Ashton-under-lyne, Lancashire. Joined the Manchester Regiment as Private 2771. (Served with the 19th Battalion and then the 18th Battalion). - not sure when?

First out in France on 9/11/1914 - not sure which Battalion?

Promoted to Lance-Corporal.

Died of wounds on 30/7/1917 with 18th Battalion on the eve of 3rd Battle of Ypres.

Buried at The Huts Cemetery, Dickenush, Belgium at I.A.13. Headstone details register against a Mrs. T. Langan of 3 Howard Street, Denton, Manchester.

Listed on the Denton War Memorial.

Entitled to the 1914 Star trio.

Can any Manchesters expert add anything for me please?

Merry Christmas.

Stephen (Maldon)

The Battalion left for Chateau Segard and arrived at 1.30am the next morning and provided work and carrying parties for the next few days.

Thank you John. Really interesting to see what he was doing over the last few days of his life. So looks like he might have been hit whilst in the trenches waiting on 3rd Ypres?

Regards.

Territorial number, not the 4th City Battalion (19th). Probably 9th Bn as he enlisted at Ashton.

Thanks John. His MIC has three entries - from the top just Manch R, then 19th, then 18th (all under same service number)?

Regards.

Many thanks Mark - the picture is really building now. I am planning a visit to his grave in the New year. Would be great to get hold of a picture of him?

Regards.

That's great Mark - so first out there with the 2nd? According to LLT, the 2nd's movements were:

August 1914 : at the Curragh. Part of 14th Brigade in 5th Division.
17 August 1914 ; landed at Le Havre.
30 December 1915 : moved with the Brigade to 32nd Division.
6 February 1918 : transferred to 96th Brigade in same Division.

That is my assessment. There is an erroneous 1914/15 Star Roll entry as well but again with 2Manch with a 2/12/14 qual Date. But crossed out. The wounding in 1916 shows he was attached 19th by then.

Soldiers Effects record show war Gratuity etc to his brother Thomas. War Gratuity £17. Private.

According to the numbering blog for the Manchesters 2772 enlisted 12/2/14. The wounding record and this seem relatively consistent for an enlistment date in late 1913 or early 1914.

Territorial number,

Obviously a right load of misleading nonsense. Apologies

I really should stop trying to contribute to threads that have anything to do with numbering (or, indeed, with threads having anything to do with quite a lot of things)

Thanks again Mark, HolymoleyRE and John.

Sorry about the parallel thread - not sure how that happened. Perhaps the Mods could amalgamate?

Regards.
