Steve349 Posted 25 December , 2017 Posted 25 December , 2017 My grandfather served in the First World War and Second World War. In WW1 He served with, I believe, 10th Battalion SWB is there anyone that could assist me in finding his details? His name was Walter Clement born in 1896 in Stourbridge Any info would be gratefully received Thank you
corisande Posted 25 December , 2017 Posted 25 December , 2017 The only one I can find is for 22147 Pte Walter ClementS who was in 10th and 11th SWB
johnboy Posted 25 December , 2017 Posted 25 December , 2017 A good start can be found here http://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/soldiers/how-to-research-a-soldier/
Steve349 Posted 25 December , 2017 Author Posted 25 December , 2017 Thank you for the prompt reply. Does it show If he started off in the 10th or 11th
Steve349 Posted 25 December , 2017 Author Posted 25 December , 2017 Johnboy thank you that is a great help
corisande Posted 25 December , 2017 Posted 25 December , 2017 (edited) My reading of the medal roll is 11th , then 10th It also gives him landing in France on 4 Dec 1915 and being discharged on 6 Feb 1919 you can get the War Diaries for these battalions which will show a day by day account of their movements and note, I have no idea if this is your grandfather! corisande Posted 25 December , 2017 Posted 25 December , 2017 Does the family have his Ww1 medals. If so they will have his service number engraved on the rim
Steve349 Posted 25 December , 2017 Author Posted 25 December , 2017 I do have some of his medals as he also fought thro the Second World War I will check his medals when I get home thank you for your assistance it is much appreciated
HolymoleyRE Posted 25 December , 2017 Posted 25 December , 2017 (edited) Hi Steve, Any hint on a DoB..MoD still have records for those that served past 1921 for W Clement(s) Doh just read the OP again 1896...there are few for that year. Just need the day and month. Andy Edited 25 December , 2017 by HolymoleyRE
HolymoleyRE Posted 25 December , 2017 Posted 25 December , 2017 (edited) Walter Clement born 2nd Qtr 1896 registered in Stourbridge, 1901 Census, son Edward and Kate, has him as Clements. So could this man be a likely? Andy Edited 25 December , 2017 by HolymoleyRE
Steve349 Posted 25 December , 2017 Author Posted 25 December , 2017 Andy thank you - that must be him as that was his mother and father as well and he was born in Stourbridge would the regtl number shown be from WW2 ?
HolymoleyRE Posted 25 December , 2017 Posted 25 December , 2017 Who did he serve with in WW2, as that number fits a post 1920 Garrison Artillery number. I need to check the lists again as there were a few W Clements....interestingly there is a W Clements with a 1920 SWB number (wrong date of birth, but the lists aren't 100% accurate). Andy
Steve349 Posted 26 December , 2017 Author Posted 26 December , 2017 Between wars he joined the TF and was in the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers so consequently was in the BEF he was captured at Dunkirk as part of the screen force and taken to Stalag viiiB where he remained until the end of the war Towards the end of the First World War he was wounded (not sure where) but taken to a military hospital in Liverpool but not sure where - any ideas anyone ??
HolymoleyRE Posted 26 December , 2017 Posted 26 December , 2017 (edited) So with the wounding info and link to Monmouthshire, and the Btn. Then this War Office Casualty list from 15th October 1917, may tie #22147 Walter Clements in. Wounded is likely to have happened early to mid Sept, therefore cross check what Btn he was in and their the Division. look on the Long Long Trail for that Division and see what actions they were in 1917, at the same time looking at the WDs fir both the 10th & 11th Btn for Late Aug through to Oct and see if anythingpops up. Re the post 1921 service records, as he served in WW2 there will more than likley still be a file at MOD, ideally you need his WW2 service number. So if he were a Royal Engineer captured at Dunkirk and moved to Stalag 8b (Lamsdorf) later renumbered 344. Then this could be him, I will have to check the PoW lists a little closer. Initials: W Surname: Clements Resided Town: Stalag 344, Lamsdorf Nationality: British Resided Country: Poland Fate: Prisoner of War Information: POW No. 12165 Rank: Corporal Service Number: 1981207 Andy Edited 26 December , 2017 by HolymoleyRE
HolymoleyRE Posted 26 December , 2017 Posted 26 December , 2017 There appears to have been only 1 "W Clements" (I checked Clement too) taken PoW in WW2. So he must be your Grandfather, his records can be requested at a small'ish cost here..... https://www.gov.uk/guidance/request-records-of-deceased-service-personnel Andy
Steve349 Posted 26 December , 2017 Author Posted 26 December , 2017 That is him - although born in Stourbridge he moved and lived in Newport prior to the war thank you so much for your assistance
