Madeline Battle Hancock

A Merry Christmas to all!

I am looking for information on the husband of Madeline Battle Hancock an

American nurse who served in France.

The information I have says she was married to a British Army officer. I realize this is very little information to go on but I am hoping someone on the forum will recognize her name and can share some information on what became of her husband. She was from North Carolina and received twelve medals as a result of her service during the war.

Madelon Battle married Mortimer Pawson Hancock, (1870-1939), in North Carolina on 2 July 1904.

Two photos of him here. His first name is Mortimer - not Martimer:

Madelon died in France in 1930:

HELLANCOURT formerly HANCOCK Madelon 1 Durham-place Smith-street Chelsea Middlesex single woman died 29 September 1930 at 12 Rue Boulevard Du Tzarewitch Nice France Administration London 5 December to Westray Battle Hancock esquire

Did she marry again after she and Mortimer were divorced?

That's one of mine - the headstone of her son from the churchyard at Wortham in Suffolk.

Unfortunately reviewing that looks like two of the links to pictures of Madelon are now dead.  One is still available, in addition to the picture of her in her nurses uniform which can be seen here:

https://www.ncpedia.org/hancock-madelon-glory-battle

The other is a picture of the "wife of Colonel M P Hancock" taken on the 1st May 1922  when she is shown playing with the regimental pet cheetah which she had tamed  :-)

The caption notes that her husband had been commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers in Somaliland in the previous year

The marriage and birth of the son probably took place when M P Hancock was a Captain in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, stationed in Bermuda.

From a list of commanding officers of the 1st Battalion in the Great War

Lieutenant-Colonel Mortimer Pawson Hancock 21/02/1916 to 15/08/1916 Wounded

Lieutenant-Colonel Mortimer Pawson Hancock 11/11/1916 to 19/04/1918 Replaced

Mortimer Pawson Hancock died on the 19th April 1939 while living at Abbey Mill House, Coggeshall, Essex. Mortimer is said to be a Colonel, (retired) in His Majesty’s Army. The executors of his estate are Dorothy Sophia Hancock and Westray Battle Hancock.

Given his senior rank I suspect he might get the odd mention!

Hope that helps,
