arthur6719 Posted 17 December , 2017 Posted 17 December , 2017 Can anybody help please. My grandfather was in the British Regular Army and was awarded the Mons Star, he served on active duty until December 1914 after that he complained of dizzy spells and was transferred to other regiments and then finally to the Labour corp. What I cannot understand is that in the early 1920's my father, his son, was brought up on Gibraltar and 2 of my uncles were born their whilst he was in army service. With the decommissioning of hundreds of thousands of fit soldiers how could a unfit for active service private end up still serving when many were demobbed who would have loved a cushy job post war.
MaureenE Posted 17 December , 2017 Posted 17 December , 2017 If your grandfather served after January 1921, you can request a possible file from the Ministry of Defence. If a file is available, it may not provide an answer to all of your questions, but would at least provide a time line. Details for obtaining a MOD service record are given on the FIBIS Fibiwiki page British Army, section Army personnel serving after January 1921 https://wiki.fibis.org/w/British_Army#Army_personnel_serving_after_January_1921 If your grandfather's brother, whose sons were born on Gibraltar, was posted there before his brother, perhaps he was able to put in a good word for your grandfather, and help get him transferred there. Alternatively, perhaps your grandfather was posted to Gibraltar in a Garrison Battalion and was able to stay on there after the war. Your grandfather's health may have improved over the years, or the medical criteria changed, so that he was upgraded medically. Cheers Maureen
