jeffdanward Posted 12 December , 2017 Posted 12 December , 2017 I am doing some research on the Bombala, sunk 25 April 1918. and one of its crew. The crew are remembered on several naval memorial generally in the Division to which they belonged. An exception are those who made it to Senegal.and died on the beach where they were buried .These men are remembered at the Hollybrook memorial at Southampton. Anyone know why?. Also is it fair to assume that all those remembered on the memorial at Freetown Sierra Leone ( 27) were citizens of that country who had been recruited locally to serve on the Bombala. Regards Jeff Ward.
kenmorrison Posted 12 December , 2017 Posted 12 December , 2017 (edited) The Merseyside Roll of Honour has lots of detail on who died when at merseysiderollofhonour.co.uk/obits/ships/bombala.htm file:///C:/Users/Ken/AppData/Local/Packages/Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe/TempState/Downloads/bombala.htm The notes on one of the men named on the Hollybrook memorial reads: The vessel was torpedoed on April 25th, and the survivors managed to get away in two open boats. The boat in which Clark had a place reached the island of Mauretania on May 3rd, but out of the fourteen officers and men she carried only two have been accounted for, and it is surmised by search parties that were sent out that the drifting sand has hidden the bodies of the remaining twelve. http://www.merseysiderollofhonour.co.uk/get2.php?cwgc=1416440 Ken Edited 12 December , 2017 by kenmorrison
jeffdanward Posted 15 December , 2017 Author Posted 15 December , 2017 Thanks, I have a copy of the Mersey roll of honour. My information is that Leading Seaman Leadley and David Medera of Sierra Leone were the sole survivors. Some years ago I visited Dakar and went along the coast. The sand dunes are immense. I have Leadley's service history, by November he was back at sea on the Coventry. No mention of his ordeal in the lifeboat. Medera is said to have died of Malaria while still in Senegal.
