I have not seen any pics of soldiers with the S.71 quill back or the double edged Wurttenburg PFM bayonets.Has anyone seen pics in a book
trajan Posted 9 December , 2017 Posted 9 December , 2017 Hi Steve, And welcome to GWF! Short answer is 'Yes'! There is a useful book which will guide you - German Uniforms And Bayonets 1841-1945: 676 Pictures Of Soldiers With Their Bayonets by K.Lubbe (1999) - check Amazon. Broadly speaking, you name it, when it comes to all formations, then they used whatever was available - certainly up to 1917 or so when enough 98/05 'Butcher' bayonets were around. E.g., there is a Bavarian document of 5.3.17. that orders the withdrawal of all 'Ersatz' bayonets - classed in Bavaria as S.88/98 - then in service and their replacement with 98/05's. It reads: "1.) Sämtliche Seitengewehre 88.98 sind sofort an die zuständigen Artilleriedepots einzuliefern. 2.) Ersatz wird in Seitengewehren 98.05 geleistet werden. Die Einlieferung der Seitengewehre 88.98 darf vom Eintreffen des Ersatzes nicht abhängig gemacht werden" More specifically, photographs / postcards show Landsturm usually with S.71, sometimes Landwehr also, although they generally have S.71/84 or S.98 in my experience up to 1916 - while only this morning I saw a p/c in German e-bay of a Marine Abteilung with something earlier than that, I think a Hirschfänger. Mind you, I have never really looked into this in any great detail as I am after photographs of troops with 'Ersatz' bayonets... Oh, also - have a look at: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/topic/131011-german-bayonet-questions/ Trajan
Steve1871 Posted 9 December , 2017 Author Posted 9 December , 2017 Thanks trajan for your reply. I have Luggs books, just never seen the rare Wirttenburger double edge PFM in any period pic that I can remember or the "pipe/quill back, I have both bayonets. New to Posting stuff, there are tons of topics to ask, not sure where to start!😊😁

The other Pfm 71's do appear in WW1 photographs - Carter shows some in his German Bayonets volume IV, one of which could just be a Wuerttemberg version - the photo (dated 1915) is not clear, except that the chappie is in the Eisenbahn-Regiment Nr. 1. Not sure what you mean exactly by the quill-back S.71, given the various versions of this that were around! Do feel free to ask questions - and post photographs! There are many on the GWForum interested in these things! Trajan
