Remembered Today:

79th Machine Gun Company and its formation?

Can anyone tell me when and where the 79th Machine Gun Coy. was formed?

Also (and I appreciate this is a long shot) if any one has any information specific to the 79th regarding their role in the Battle of Horseshoe Hill in 1916 and first Battle of Doiran in 1917, it would be gratefully appreciated,

Kind regards,

Pete.

My "go to" list is on the Long Long Trail  but Chris Baker has a gap in his listings, excluding 77, 78 & 79 Companies, so no date, I'm afraid. Chris does note that it joined its brigade on 15/7/16.

Thanks John, that was my "first port of call".

I am hoping that someone on the forum specialises in the MGC and sees this thread,

regards,

Pete.

Hello Pete

I have a mote of the War Diaries of the MG and TM units of 26 Division:

26 DIVISION
WO 95/4865 Divisional Trench Mortar Batteries 1918 Feb. - Oct.
WO 95/4870 77 Infantry Brigade
WO 95/4870 Brigade Machine Gun Company 1916 July - 1919 Mar.
WO 95/4870 Brigade Trench Mortar Battery 1916 Nov. - 1918 Oct.
WO 95/4874 78 Infantry Brigade
WO 95/4874 Brigade Machine Gun Company 1916 July - 1919 Apr.
WO 95/4874 Brigade Trench Mortar Battery 1917 Jan. - 1918 Sept.
WO 95/4877 79 Infantry Brigade
WO 95/4877 Brigade Machine Gun Company 1916 July - 1919 Mar.
WO 95/4877 Brigade Trench Mortar Battery 1916 Nov. - 1918 Oct.

The snag with these units is that the brigade or divisional number does not appear in the separate entries so they are difficult to find using TNA's search engine.

I don't think these diaries have been downloaded yet so you may need to visit Kew, but if you re-post your query in the "Away from the Western Front - Salonika" subforum (or ask a Mod to move it there) you may find a Pal who already has this information and would be willing to share it with you.

Good luck!

Ron

Hi

I believe that it was formed in June 1916 at Grantham.

You may get more MGC experts see this post if you put it in the "Units & Formations " section
