Interested Posted 3 December , 2017 Posted 3 December , 2017 I've just been checking TNA Medal Cards for my maternal grandfather's records: 123956 Pioneer J. Schofield, R. E. and find that the number refers to William Steele, and there are four J. Schofields in the R.E. but none with the service number on the 14-15 Star, War and Victory medals, and none of them were Pioneers. Is this an unusual "stamping" error? Do I need to do something about it, and if so, who do I notify? Any comments and suggestions? Thanks, Philip
hmsk212 Posted 3 December , 2017 Posted 3 December , 2017 (edited) There is a John Schofield with the Royal Engineers number 123966. He later served as Private 295466 with the Labour Corps from whom he was discharged with Silver War Badge 434766. http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_fn=john&_ln=schofield&_no=123966&_crp=&_ttl=&discoveryCustomSearch=true&_cr1=WO+372&_dt=M&_col=200&_hb=tna Steve Edited 3 December , 2017 by hmsk212
Interested Posted 3 December , 2017 Author Posted 3 December , 2017 Thanks Steve for finding this, Yes, now that I've put my specs on I can see that the service number ends ..66 and not ..56. Strange, he didn't show up when I did a general search. I have the usual three medals but don't know what happened to the War Badge or the discharge certificate; long lost now, I think.
