Barney09 Posted 1 December , 2017 Posted 1 December , 2017 I am planning on visiting my great uncle H Dunn's grave on the Centenary of his death on 16 December 2017... He is buried in Poelkapelle, Belgium...... The CWWG site indicate his body was found at map ref V.29.B.5.5. Can any of you kind people identify this location so I can make visit? This would be so amazing..
clk Posted 1 December , 2017 Posted 1 December , 2017 (edited) Hi, There is advice on how to read trench map references on the LLT here. You can probably find better versions, but this link should open up on square V.29. If you use the transparency slider you can see how it fits into the modern landscape. Use the advice on the LLT to pinpoint a more specific place within the square. Regards Chris Edit: This link opens up to a map from December 1917, so is probably better than the original map I pointed you to Edited 1 December , 2017 by clk

Barney09 Posted 1 December , 2017 Author Posted 1 December , 2017 You guys are great..... How can I find this on a sat nav?
Don Regiano Posted 1 December , 2017 Posted 1 December , 2017 On the NLS links you have been given, place your cursor at V29. b. 5. 5 and the lat/long coordinates will appear at the bottom right. Use these.
Barney09 Posted 2 December , 2017 Author Posted 2 December , 2017 Herbert Dunn was in the 4th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. Does anyone have access to any records that might suggest what occurred on 16 December 1917.....
Jrmh Posted 2 December , 2017 Posted 2 December , 2017 Private DUNN, H Service Number 49842 Died 16/12/1917 10th Bn. Durham Light Infantry If this is him then War Diary here: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7352751
clk Posted 2 December , 2017 Posted 2 December , 2017 Hi, His service papers (here on FMP - they should also be on Ancestry) indicate that having been sent overseas he was transferred to the 10th Battalion at 35 Infantry Base Depot on 20th March 1917, before being sent in to the field. In terms of the events of 16th December 1917, the Brigade HQ and Division HQ diaries will probably augment, and add context to the Battalion diary. The National Archives search page is here, and the Ancestry search page here. Regards Chris
Barney09 Posted 3 December , 2017 Author Posted 3 December , 2017 Thanks gents...... I will let you know how I get on...
Barney09 Posted 4 December , 2017 Author Posted 4 December , 2017 I am wondering why a lad from Devon ended up in the Durham Light Infantry?
rickpreston@nasuwt.net Posted 5 December , 2017 Posted 5 December , 2017 it all depends upon when he joined the army. Particularly after conscription was introduced March 1916 when a man was called up he would have been put id a regiment that was in need of men.
Barney09 Posted 20 December , 2017 Author Posted 20 December , 2017 Thanks to everyone who helped me with this...... I visited his grave and also the spot where his body was found....
thetrenchrat22 Posted 20 December , 2017 Posted 20 December , 2017 I’m glad that you were able to visit him and his original place of burial
