I have the History of the 89th Brigade 1914-1918 by Brig-Gen. F.C. Stanley.

Will gladly delve into.

Even the faintest mention of 89 Coy MGC would go down a treat here! :)

And again, any mention of 89 Coy MGC's contribution to the attack on 30 July 1916 would be much appreciated.

John

(PS: Ronnie - what's the translation of the Gaelic inscription on your memorial site ?)

Phil & John, I'm afraid I couldn't find anything at all with regards to the 89 Coy MGC. Sorry I couldn't be of help.

John, I'm glad you brought the matter up of the Gaelic inscription on Port Ellen's war memorial, as I've been meaning to add the English translation for sometime to the webpage. I've had a few e-mails from people asking the same question as youself - even from Poland.

I'm not a Gaelic speaker myself, but have had it translated by a native speaker in our village, where it is still spoken on our island.

Gaelic inscription: MAIRIDH AN AINM CU SIORRUIDH

English translation: THEIR NAME WILL REMAIN FOR EVER

This incident regarding the Scottish Horse happened at Gallipoli in which their CO and a look-out were speaking Gaelic. They were arrested by a patrol from the Lancashire Fusiliers as being Turkish spies wearing British uniforms - Great stuff.

Cheers,

Ronnie.
