Michael Pegum Posted 2 January , 2005 Share Posted 2 January , 2005 Liam, Re. the Larne Memorial. I have two postcards showing this memorial in earlier sites: outside the Laharna Hotel, and at a crossroads beside a small church (see scan). A note on the back of the latter says that, by 1978, the memorial had been moved again, to be near St. Cedma's C. of I church. If you are interested, I can e-mail a high-quality scan. carninyj Posted 2 January , 2005 Share Posted 2 January , 2005 Michael, I'm sorry to butt in on your offer of the scans to Liam, but I just wanted to say how delighted I am to see them. Thank you very much for putting them on the Forum. I'm not a Larne man myself and Liam will be needed to confirm this, but I think the postcards show the memorial on its original site. The hotel, now gone, is at the same crossroads as the church - I think its the Methodist Church - and the lorry is just heading down the Curran Road towards the harbour. The hotel & church were on opposite sides of the same junction. The memorial is now just in front of St Cedma's Church. Thanks again. Regards Carninyj
Desmond7 Posted 2 January , 2005 Share Posted 2 January , 2005 Agree about the Larne Memorial - nice to see. For FredCarrs Here's the Ballymena Memorial Park and world war one obelisk where Armstrong is commemorated. Modern day view of course.
larneman Posted 3 January , 2005 Author Share Posted 3 January , 2005 If you are interested, I can e-mail a high-quality scan. Michael Of course I would love a copy of your postcards as I do not have them in my collection. As Carninyj wrote one is looking at Memorial towards Barnhill/Curran road with the local Methodist Church in view and the other is looking from the church side towards the hotel. I have been collecting postcards of important crossroads in the Co. Antrim through the years. I have many but not these 2. My love interest in WW1 grew from crossing that very busy road with 30 to 40 buses picking up tourists from the hotel and my mother would pause at the memorial before continuing to cross. I would read the names and wonder who, why, what. I passed it at least twice aday, every day The WW1 names are on the sides and WW2 is on the back. On my site at http://larne-in-war1-irishgenealogy.net you will find 3 photographs at the new location. The 4th was no good. Click on the photo's to get the large images. linge Posted 4 January , 2005 Share Posted 4 January , 2005 Hello again Glyn This may also be your James Timothy Bush: Sergeant, 8186, James Bush, 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment Died 8th October 1917 Buried Hooge Crater Cemetery Grave Reference XVII.C.13 SDGW says he was born, enlisted and registered in Bishop's Stortford, Herts. I know this is not far from Stansted, Essex and Farnham, Essex where I suspect he was actually born. He was probably aged 29 years when he died. Born in Farnham, Essex in 1888 (Registered Mar Qtr at Bishop's Stortford) the birth was registered as James Timothy B(ush) Saggers. His parents James Timothy Bush and Charlotte Saggers married some months after his birth(Sept Qtr 1888 at Bishop's Stortford). He appears in the 1901 Census aged 13 years as James Bush and is living with his family in Farnham, Essex. Philip Hallings Smith Was probably aged 19 years when he died and the son of Harold John Smith and Minnie Maud Smith (nee Mascall). In 1901 I believe the family were living in Saffron Walden and Harold was a Manager & Traveller for Gravel & Sand Quarry. Hope this helps Ken Linge

bobpike Posted 5 January , 2005 Share Posted 5 January , 2005 Glyn, having written a book on Saffron Walden's memorial, I have spent some time looking at the surrounding villages, including Stansted. I can confirm that Pte. A Morton also appears on Broxted; Cpl. R Law on Rickling & Ugley; Pte. C Robinson, one on Hempstead, one on Elsenham (not the same man) & Sgt. A B Florey on Ugley. I have photos of many of the headstones & have 'additions' to the memorials i.e names that have a connection, but do not appear on the memorial for some reason. If you wish to contact me I'd be more than happy to share my research, Bob Pike

I Dont think anyones done a book on the Stansted Memorial but I would be more than happy to share any info with you. Maybe if its OK with you we could carry on this conversation off Forum. I think we can e-mail through the forum - not sure if I am meant to post my e-mail within the topics. Anyhow I would love to discuss this more. linge Posted 6 January , 2005 Share Posted 6 January , 2005 Ah! well Pete just pipped me at the post. TO ANYONE RESEARCHING MEN COMMEMORATED ON A LOCAL WAR MEMORIAL My wife Pam and I are researching a rather large one THIEPVAL MEMORIAL (not local to us as we live in Northumberland) and at present have only managed to amass info on some 3000 men so only 69000 to go!!! We are collecting BIOGRAPHICAL information (OVER AND ABOVE THAT CONTAINED ON CWGC AND SDGW DATABASES) and photos (Newspaper clippings are fine) of men commemorated on the memorial. So far we have used contributions from relatives, information from people researching memorials, Rolls of Honour, local newspapers etc. The information is displayed on the computers located in the new Thiepval Visitor Centre we are intending to continue adding to the information already held for quite some time to come and then some!!!!!!!!!! Anyone who is researching their local memorial and has biographical info and/or photos of men commemorated on Thiepval and would like to share their information with us we'd love to hear from you. Thanks Ken Linge
