Could anybody put some christian names to the attached Ancestry army list attached.

The rugby club minutes attached list him as 'fallen in action' but later one of them returned quote 'broken in health' and had subsequently died.

Can't find him on CWGC or local death entries, I've tried for years to identify this person.

The initials are correct from the newspaper in 1914.

Kind Regards.

J B  Humphry  is shown on the list of members fallen as a private

the army list names officers ?

EDIT

The J B Humphrey you have highlighted   above

refers to the Army List of 1945

so not likely to be your man

He could have cause have been taken as a prisoner of war

assumed to have fallen ?

Have you considered John Boyd Humphrey born Mar qtr 1898, West Derby, the only

J B on FreeBMD 1880 to 1900 in the Liverpool area, of course there could have been others where the second name wasn't included, but right time frame.

To dispell another J B Humphrey from West Derby, John's brother was James Buller Humphrey born 1900 served in the Navy and RAF, and lived to a ripe old age.

Came across this Humphrey who served in the camel corps

I think we can also discount this one

If you know who all the others were on your list in the OP, then what regiments did they serve in? That might give a clue if they were mainly one regiment

They served all over the place see http://home.btconnect.com/seftonrufc/SeftonWarDead.htm

Thanks Ray, it does pay to take in fully what the OP is asking for, as my old teachers would have said Must do better next time!

Hi,

On his website, Dave appears to attribute a Fred Appleby writing in 1924:

HumphreyJB_teacher.jpg.7d45181a31e7c5b14e79ca53994e6447.jpg

As a long shot, I wonder if 301262 Joseph Humphreys (Manchester Regiment) might be a contender for the 8th man? In Soldiers' Effects he appears to have been 'discharged insane' on 30th August 1920. The Effects record has him recorded as J Humphries, but the medal rolls have him as Joseph Humphreys.

Regards

Chris

Thought I had seen that number somewhere...appears he was a POW Chris.

But has him as Humphries, however the actual records have as Humphreys.

Severely wounded GSW leg, and dealt with through the Preston Records Office. from Stockport, but birth registration (and census of 1911) doesn't appear to show a middle name.

David, another question how sure are we that the middle name is correct?  Just because the paper has it as JB doesn't mean it is right?

Regards

Andy

Thanks for all the interest, as you can see it's a good tester.

The date of the minutes reporting the fallen was 1st April 1919.

Being a schoolmaster, Applebee was meticulous in his grammar and spelling, here is J.B.H joining the club in Sept 1913, perhaps he'd just turned 18 and eligible to play.

His proposer appears to be 61885 Private Gwilym Madoc Jones 1/6th The Kings Liverpool Regiment born 1895 in West Derby.

Maybe we can find a link between the two men....or not!

Both Gwilym and brother Trevor (R.Welch Fus) played rugby and were bank apprentices (1911), perhaps they coerced JBH into playing.

There appears to be three Medal Index Cards held for Gwilym Madoc Jones at the National Archive, one of which records him as 2155 61885. I suspect that's two separate service numbers, so maybe something on the Service Medal Roll to indicate which battalion 2155 relates to.

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D3143901

A quick run through the MiCs for Liverpool 215* and 6188* doesn't bring up any Humphrey \ Humphreys \ Humphries, but there are gaps, plus the 215* option brings up between three or four MiC's for each number in most instances, so could have been units that provided drafts to battalion seeing active service. If that's the case the link to J B Humphrey, even if they enlisted at the same time. could be lost.

To recap then:

 1) There is no J.B. Humphrey listed by the CWGC.

2) there is no MIC for J.B. Humphrey

3) Between March 1878 and December 1900, there are 6 J. B. Humphrey births listed in England & Wales:

John Benjamin, Brackley 1878

John Bertie C., Medway, 1886

John Brown, Sunderland , 1894

John Boyd, W. Derby, 1898

John Bowser, Darlington, 1899

James Buller, W.Derby 1900

On the basis he would be at least 16 in 1913, we could exclude the last 3.

That leaves :

John Benjamin, Brackley 1878

John Bertie C., Medway, 1886

John Brown, Sunderland , 1894

none of which look promising.

And I don't suppose there's a contemporary record of his death before 1919?

Can we be sure he died?

I've had this guy in the back of my mind but can't equate 'Fogden' to a middle name of 'B'.

He was born 1896 in Liverpool so ties in nicely with him starting to play in 1913.

His mother was Sarah Humphrey (nee Warren) perhaps he was called Bunny
