Notes on the Battle for Ypres April 19th to 29th, 1915 On the morning of Monday April 19th we had our Main Dressing Station at Ypres I.2.c.3.2 and our Advanced Dressing Station at Wieltje C.28.b [Sheet 28 Ypres]. At 11am shells fell in Ypres, close to our Dressing Station. Shrapnel and pieces of shell fell all day and night. A few casualties. Tuesday and Wednesday April 20th and 21st shells fell at irregular intervals in Ypres. Thursday April 22nd heavy shelling all morning, about a dozen casualties among the troops near our Dressing Station, none in our own Unit. Men ordered in unless on duty and to lie down flat when shells heard coming. This undoubtedly saved some of our men. 4:30pm By orders of ADMS, B and C Sections were removed from Ypres, it being almost untenable and proceeded to Oosthoek. B and C bivouacked there. A Section under Major E B Hardy with Capt J J Fraser, Capt D H McDougall and Capt E G Doe remained at the Dressing Station in Ypres with 3 Motor Ambulances and Water Cart. All our Bearers were at the Advanced Dressing Station, Wieltje C.28.c with 3 Motor and 3 Horse Ambulances and Water Cart. From here very special reports reached me from Col Watson about the most excellent conduct and work of Capt T H McKillip [recommended for DSO] Friday April 23rd 2:30am. The Bearers of No 1 Fd Amb arrived and went into bivouac with us at Oosthoek. 10am Bearers of No 1 Fd Amb with all available Ambulance transport left for 3rd Brigade HQ near Wieltje C.27.b. 7:45am Major E B Hardy reports from Dressing Station in Ypres that they were under continuous shell fire all night and that as soon as he could evacuate all the wounded he was going to move the DS. 10:30am Major Hardy reports having dressed and evacuated during the night about 300 wounded soldiers and civilians and that he was compelled to move the Dressing Station to Cross Roads H.12.c where he was now established. Seven of our own Unit wounded. 12 noon Order from ADMS to establish Dressing Station at the Brielen School House B.29.a. This was established then by B Section by 2pm under Major D B Bentley. 5pm Ordered to establish another Dressing Station at Chateau Brielen H.6.b this being carried out by Major A E Snell. Capt F A C Scrimger ordered to 14th Bn as MO vice Capt Boyd wounded. Major E B Hardy was ordered to move his Dressing Station to School House, Brielen and assist B Section there. Expect heavy casualties from Advanced Dressing Stations along the Canal and at St Julien and St Jean and Wieltje. Report from Capt W A Burgess at Advanced Dressing Station, Wieltje that it was untenable and he had transferred into St Jean C.27.c. Two of our Unit wounded. Very gratifying reports were received about the splendid skill and personal bravery of our bearers in this Section which was the worst section of them all to clear from. The men frequently placing their wounded in ditches and lying flat to avoid shells. Where there was little protection, the wounded got the first choice. No wounded man received a second wound while in our charge. The three Officers in this Section, Capts Burgess, Brown and McKillip deserve the greatest of praise for their untiring devotion to duty. Here was where the poisonous gases were first encountered and from here we got our first cases of Gas wounded, dull, heavy, listless, coughing, vomiting and collapsed. 6pm Situation Dressing Stations in School House and at Chateau, Brielen. We are to clear wounded from Advanced Dressing Stations, St Jean and Advanced Dressing Station of No 1 Fd Amb at Canal B.30.b. Went up to Advanced Dressing Station at Canal, found it full of wounded, brought 15 down with me in the Ambulance and arranged to remove the rest. 10pm Wounded coming in fast, evacuating to Vlamertinghe and Poperinghe by Motor Amb convoys, Motor Lorries and Motor Buses. 12 midnight School House, 3 Estaminets and the Church full of wounded. This continued all night, wounded arriving and being evacuated. April 24th 7am Wounded still arriving but in less numbers, shells falling near our Dressing Stations. 12 noon All wounded evacuated. Casualties: 750 wounded and 2 deaths. These were buried in the yard of the School House. Our Dressing Station at the School House being untenable, it was removed to the School House in Vlamertinghe at H.9.b. 12:30pm Capt G Musson detailed as MO, 8th Bn vice Capt Mothersill wounded. 8pm Wounded coming in fast. A large number of Indians among them and more Gas cases; reports from these - Gas from trenches by wind also in bombs and shells. Capt Burgess reported he had removed our Advanced Dressing Station at St Jean on account of it becoming untenable to the Chateau H.6.b. 10pm Wounded arriving in large numbers, 4 Operating tables going in one room, evacuations being rapidly carried out. A building a few yards away hit by shell. 1 killed and 3 wounded. 12 midnight Wounded arriving in large numbers, a great many Gas cases. They seem as if suffocated. This continued off and on all night. Thanks to the Red Cross Motor Amb Convoys the evacuations were rapidly carried out. The wounded noted shells bursting near them. April 25th 7am Wounded still pouring in. 12 noon Casualties for 24 hrs: Wounded 590. Dead 1 Capt G Musson reported back from 8th Bn.
