Hi,

I purchased a single dog tag marked to Rev. Wm. Howie. P.  8 A&SH.  Any information on Rev. Howie or how to research him would be welcome.

I found a link from a previous thread, but it no longer seems to work. http://www.chaplains-museum.hampshire.org.uk/

The record of all Church of Scotland ministers is Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae. The succession of ministers in the parish churches of Scotland . However the versions usually found online are usually very old. The version available in ancestry only goes up to 1860ish, I think.  There should be relatively up to date versions in some libraries.

RM

Edit: If he served overseas he should have medals and therefore a medal rolls index card.

Rev. William Howie, B.D., Church of Scotland, was appointed Army Chaplain 4th Class, ranking as Capt., on 1 December 1909, Territorial Force.

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/28336/page/869 see heading of section on page 868

Promoted to Chaplain 3rd Class 1 December 1919

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/32234/supplement/1452

From the Active List to be Chaplain 3rd Class on reorganisation 24 November 1923.

Retired 18 October 1930

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/33655/page/6479

He does not have an interview record card in the Army Chaplains Museum archive, no doubt because he was appointed well before the Great War.

Edit: Dunoon does seem to be his base, see Scottish Post Office Directory

I am not sure that the links above from the London Gazette all refer to the same W Howie BD. The one from 1910, which is his appointment to the A & S H, is correct I believe, but the others which refer to a general army chaplain may not be.

William Howie, minister of Dunoon and chaplain of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders was my grandfather. He died in 1929, so cannot have reached retiral age and retired in 1930.

My sister and I visited Dunoon a few years ago. The Castle House Museum had a record of a regimental service (in 1914 I think) I thought I had a photograph of it but I can't find it now. There is some suggestion William did go to France to perform a service at least once (after one of the major battles, I think) but we have not found any definitive proof of that. He was Minister of Dunoon from 1901 until his death in 1929.
