DaveR Posted 22 May , 2003 Share Posted 22 May , 2003 I am trying to identify the officer in the attached photo. I believe he was RAMC and that he was killed. The photo appears to have been taken in Northampton, although I understand he was a doctor at Alder Hey Hospital at some time. Ideally I would like to return the photo to a descendant of his. Can someone tell me his rank, and if anyone has Officers Died in the Great War, some idea of how many of that rank died would be very helpful. thanks Dave Risley

Guest FRANKBARTHOLOMEW Posted 23 May , 2003 Share Posted 23 May , 2003 Heritage Plus is correct. The rings on the cuff of his tunic indicate that he holds 'field' rank, i.e. Major or Lieutenant Colonel. The 'ring' system, as I refer to it, was used to denote the rank of junior and field officers. Full Colonels and General Officers were identified by their rank badges being on their shoulder straps, together with gorget patches on their lapels. Staff Officers (including those of field and junior rank) also wore gorget patches until 1920. Bye for now! Frank Bartholomew
Paul Reed Posted 23 May , 2003 Share Posted 23 May , 2003 Looks also as if he has the ribbon of the Queen's South Africa medal for service in the Boer War.
