New CWGC website

Many thanks.  I tried right-click + "view page source" and when I couldn't find a JPG had to give up.  I had never used Inspect before but it works well.  I also tried clicking the "link" in the second pane instead of opening a new tab and nothing really happened.  However, I noticed a truncated duplicate in the third pane (bottom right) which brought up the image on the left in lieu of the original page.  To get back, you click the X top right.  Panic over!

Hello

My website www.buxtonwarmemorials.co.uk commemorates the sacrifice made by almost 350 men and women in the Buxton, Derbyshire, area.

I included in the site close on 1,000 links to the CWGC website so readers could get a full picture of where each casualty now rests or is commemorated.

Similarly, my earlier site - www.grandadswar.co.uk also contains links for the casualties of the 1st Bn. Cheshire Regt. in 1914.

After the CWGC re-design NONE of these links now work, although reading through this thread this doesn't seem to be a general problem - is it?

All ideas gratefully received - can't see me doing 'em all again

Graham

From a quick look it seems that the problem is that you linked to the cemetery page rather than the man's individual entry.  The URLs for individual pages haven't changed (for a couple of iterations of the site at least).

For example you have a link to Burbage (Christ Church) cemetery from your page for Charles Bennett http://www.buxtonwarmemorials.co.uk/bennett_c.html

You have http://www.cwgc.org/search/cemetery_details.aspx?cemetery=37650&mode=1 the equivalent is https://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/37650/ - you'll see that the reference number is the same, but the structure of the URL has changed.  In theory it would be a fairly simple find and replace job (replace cemetery_details. aspx?cemetery= with find-a-cemetery/cemetery/ and &mode=1 with and empty string), but it depends how you have the website pages saved and how you administer the site.  For individuals' pages there were redirects from style link to the other, it may be that the redirects for cemetery pages have just got broken in the last revamp, if you contact CWGC they may be able to reinstate redirects.

Thanks David

I can see how I would need to change the URL link on each page - and was trying to avoid having to do it, for obvious reasons. However, at the moment the changes don't seem consistent - e.g. your example is as you say, but:

Sergeant Major William Henry CHAPPELL - http://www.buxtonwarmemorials.co.uk/chappell_wh.html = he is buried in Buxton Cemetery, and the link from his page goes straight to https://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/37651/BUXTON CEMETERY i.e. the revised format. This is true of a good many more, whilst many others are still coming up with the former " /search/cemetery_details. aspx? " style. Can't for the life of me see why some links convert and others don't !

As you suggest I have emailed the CWG to seek advice.

Many thanks

Graham

I guess it depends when you did each page originally.  The other style of link was very old, they changed in the first major revamp of the CWGC site as I recall.

I checked my site and found a number of instances where links to CWGC cemetery pages no longer work and also that I had a number of different formats of link. I usually just went to the page and copied the URL.

I decided to take the matter out of the CWGC's hands to as great an extent as I could.

So I created a redirect page on my website that enables me to use a link of my own format in my webpages and to convert this into the current CWGC format in the redirect page - invisible to anyone using the site.  If the CWGC change the format again I only need to edit a single line of code in the redirect.

If anyone is interested here is the entire content of the redirect page

<?php

$cemetery = $_GET["cemetery"];

$CWGCpage = 'location: https://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/'.$cemetery;

header ($CWGCpage);

?>

Copy and paste this into a blank notepad file (other editors are available) and save it as cemetery.php and load it on to your website.  You will then be able to reference any CWGC cemetery page using a link of the form cemetery.php?cemetery=xxxxxx  where xxxxxx is the CWGC ID number for the cemetery (used in all past and current URLs). You would, of course, need to preface the link to reference it to the folder on your website where you uploaded the redirect page.

Here it is working via my site www.westberkshirewarmemorials.org.uk/cemetery.php?cemetery=52700 - anyone can use this, just change the number to the cemetery you want - in theory a perfect solution as I will update it if the CWGC change again.  However, it will only be there as long as I am paying for the site, compos mentis, alive, etc.

Just noticed that an old form of link to casualty details is also now defunct:

https://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=75229509 - only 3 such links on my site, I guess it was from the the CWGC site before the last one!

These all work

https://www.cwgc.org/search-for-war-dead/casualty/75229509/
https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/75229509/appleford,-ernest/
https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/75229509

It seems that they have dropped compatibility with an old ASP based system.
