Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 20 August , 2017 Share Posted 20 August , 2017 Dear Fellow-GWFs, I possess the medal group to Noel Gerald Brudenell Kirwan, OBE, a Bangalore Coffee Planter, late IARO and Coorg and Mysore Rifles . He served in Mesopotamia with 1/113th Infantry (attached IARO on 27 Feb 1917) and was appointed Adjutant on 7 June 1918. A 113th Infantry officer group photo shows several of his contemporaries, but Kirwan was unfortunately absent when the group was taken at Allahabad, in March 1918. Those identified are:- Seated: Lieut. W. B. Campbell (IA); a Colonel, IMS; Lieut. P. Teehan (IARO); Major L. S. Fenton, IA; a Subedar-Major; Capt C. D. Balding (IA); Capt E. H. N. Gill (IARO) Standing: a Lieut., IMS; Lieut. C. A. S. Templeton (IARO); Lieut. L. N. W. White (IA); Lieut. A. W. Pryde (IARO); unknown; Lieut D. Robertson (IARO). Perhaps some GWF knows more - or possesses a portrait of Capt N. G. B. Kirwan (medals pictured )? Kindest regards, Kim. Kindest regards, Kim. Steven Broomfield Posted 20 August , 2017 Share Posted 20 August , 2017 Out of interest, was he anything to do with the Brudenell family as in the Earls of Cardigan?
Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 20 August , 2017 Author Share Posted 20 August , 2017 (edited) Dear Steven, Thanks for contributing: much appreciated! He, N. G. B. Kirwan is on the 1911 Plantagenet Roll of blood royal, so there may well be a Cardigan connection... The medals of his brother Francis (who died pre-Great War) were on auction fairly recently. Perhaps someone else knows more about Noel? Kindest regards, Kim. Edited 21 August , 2017 by Kimberley John Lindsay

Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 20 August , 2017 Author Share Posted 20 August , 2017 Dear All, Note the family resemblance of Noel Kirwan to Sir Bertram Kirwan... Kindest regards, Kim.
Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 21 August , 2017 Author Share Posted 21 August , 2017 Dear All, Further to Noel Kirwan - Capt N. G. B. Kirwan, IARO and erstwhile Adjutant of 113th Infantry, IA: I noticed that his MIC details differ from his impressed BWM and Victory details. The one states Lieut. N. G. B. Kirwan; the other, Capt. N. Kirwan. This is in stark contrast to another IARO (2Lt J. L. Muir), whose extensive MIC details are matched on his 15 Star and medals (Capt. J. L. Muir). Kindest regards, Kim. Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 21 August , 2017 Author Share Posted 21 August , 2017 Dear GWFs with newspaper searching skills, Perhaps an off-topic press clipping could be found for the Ceremony at Bangalore on 11 August 1943, please? This was conducted by the Resident in Mysore, to present awards, including Noel Kirwan, who got his his OBE! Kindest regards, Kim.
Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 22 August , 2017 Author Share Posted 22 August , 2017 Dear All, Where are all the members with access to (admittedly off-topic) 1943 Bangalore or Times of India newspapers when I need them most? Kindest regards, Kim.
Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 12 December , 2019 Author Share Posted 12 December , 2019 (edited) Dear All, The aforementioned Allahabad March 1918 Group photo of the 113th Infantry officers included Capt C. D. (Charles Dennis) Balding, IA, whose medals I have also secured! Information already known:- Charles Dennis Balding (Born 28 Dec 1889), in Ranks 5 Aug 1914 to 8 Dec 1914. First commn 9 Dec 1914, Hampshire Regt. To IARO 6 Jan 1915. 113th Infantry (Mesopotamia). GSM clasp KURDISTAN confirmed. Major 30 Aug 1933. To Special Unemployment List 1 Apr 1939. Recall cut-off date 9 Dec 1942 (28 yrs commn Service). Still serving Burma Rifles: retired March 1943. I have his LG entries. Also, most of his IA List entries... Can any GWF aficionados, shed some (off-topic Burma) light upon, the later Major, C. D. Balding, during his time with The Burma Rifles (3-20 Burma Rifs - named on his IGS clasp BURMA 1930-32),, please? Failing this, perhaps some (on-Topic Mesopotamia and Kurdistan) light could be shed - to help me put this Officer on the map, as it were... Kindest regards, Kim.
