seaJane Posted 20 August , 2017 Share Posted 20 August , 2017 It was the hospital that artist Stanley Spencer worked in as an orderly before he was sent to Mesopotamia, and appears in at least one of his paintings for the Sandham Memorial Chapel: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/sandham-memorial-chapel A quick Google search, with inverted commas to keep the three words as a phrase, brings up a lot of material: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q="beaufort+war+hospital"&oq="beaufort+war+hospital" Hope that helps. 14276265 Posted 20 August , 2017 Share Posted 20 August , 2017 A pre-war Lunatic Asylum, the institution was requisitioned as the Beaufort War Hospital for the duration. It closed after the war and then reopened as the civilian Glenside Hospital for mentally ill patients, finally closing in the early 1990s. A grim looking building which I used to drive by on the way to work many years ago. Have a look at this link: http://www.glensidemuseum.org.uk/beaufort-war-hospital-home-page/
Admin Michelle Young Posted 20 August , 2017 Admin Share Posted 20 August , 2017 It's now part of the University of the West of England. When I was studying there fairly recently, our tutors offices were in the first floor former padded cells. I like the rather Italianate architecture, but then I worked at Bristol General Hospital which was similar. Michelle
