Ken Lees Posted 9 August , 2017 Share Posted 9 August , 2017 I am struggling to find information on the above Battalion. The LLT says they served in Egypt and subsequently in the 42nd Division. Did they serve as a unit on the Western Front? If so, when did they arrive there? I can't find their War Diaries on-line (Ancestry), which suggests they weren't on the Western Front. The reason I ask, is that I am currently researching a man who was transferred from this battalion in August, 1916 into the 1/4th Loyal North Lancs following their heavy losses at Guillemont. I suspect he was at a base Depot having just been deployed to France and that the Loyals were his first active service deployment, but I'm seeking confirmation. His service papers do not appear to be amongst the survivors.

Ken Lees Posted 9 August , 2017 Author Share Posted 9 August , 2017 Thanks Phil. I wonder why the WD doesn't come up on the Ancestry search? Not that I need it now you have confirmed arrival in France wasn't until 1917. Cheers, Ken

Cheers, Ken Not that you need it but The Western Front diary is on Ancestry here The Gallipoli diary is on Ancestry here The diaries for their period in Egypt/Palestine have not been digitised. I guess he was invalided from Gallipoli to UK and as you say transferred from the Depot to the BEF and then posted. Ken

Ken Thanks Ken, His MIC doesn't show any entitlement to a Star, so I'm thinking he was sent to France from the UK having not been out to Gallipoli.
