RFT Posted 20 July , 2017 Share Posted 20 July , 2017 The following medical abbreviations (as written) feature on a number of RAF service records. The first is is probably self explanatory but can anyone offer an explanation for the others? VD VDS C V.D.S. V.D.H. V.D.G. NYD P. Dys. Debility Rob
Ron Clifton Posted 20 July , 2017 Share Posted 20 July , 2017 NYD is "not yet diagnosed". I think that VDH is "vascular disorder of the heart" but our medic Pals will be able to amplify this, and the others. Ron

Debility - Peptic Dyspepsia Debility maybe? Any documented gastro-intestinal symptoms? It would be useful to see the abbreviations in context. RFT Posted 20 July , 2017 Author Share Posted 20 July , 2017 Thanks Ron. Have just come across another entry and which supports your interpretation. Entry reads "Relapsing Fever & N.Y.D." Another entry provides possible clarification for VDG. Entry reads "VDG suffering from VD." Looking forward to other replies on this topic. seaJane Posted 20 July , 2017 Share Posted 20 July , 2017 P.Dys.Debility - post-dysenteric debility? Dysentery would be much more likely to wear you out than dyspepsia.

Ron Clifton Posted 21 July , 2017 Share Posted 21 July , 2017 ad CD might be admitted to Convalescent Depot - in effect, "doesn't need a bed". VDVS is possibly another VD-related diagnosis. Ron
Robert Dunlop Posted 28 July , 2017 Share Posted 28 July , 2017 (edited) VDH will be Valvular Disease of the Heart, as noted earlier in the thread. It can be caused by syphillis, though congenital or rheumatic heart disease were more common. Also syphillitic valvular heart disease is typically a late sequelae.
