Hello. My Grandfather Pt E W Ashby 81199. I  was told he was a stretcher bearer and he served with 44CCS through WW1. He ended up with the US Army army of occupation in Germany.

Regards,

Nick.

Andrew 59209  has a MIC difficult to read and appears as Andrew, William James  5920 and 59200 and 59209 depending where you look! He has a SWB

Shepherd EW  58592,  This would be Shepherd Ernest William, 58392 or 58592 depending where you look; Roll says 58592 so that is correct.

My goodness, such activity! Lovely to see that the Nominal Roll is almost completely 'red' [although I daren't edit the tables but have altered my original]. Thank you all for your amendments ^_^

I'd have expected this to H[on] Lieut and QM [quartermaster].  Probably commissioned form the ranks, quartermasters had a different type of commission and carried honorary equivalent rank based on length of service (which also determined their pay), roughly speaking.  In the CCS context one of the few officers not to be a medical professional.

Diane,

any chance you also have the complete listing of the nurses in there???

That's OK, thanks for checking.

I'm thinking of ordering a download of the war diaries, hoping they make for good lecture… some war diaries are duller than a telephone book, so I'm being extra careful with what I'm ordering now…

Thought I'd look through the 44CCS diary again to check it for Telephone Book dullness.

I know it's a couple of years since you transcribed the nominal roll. The first OR mentioned I see in the download version is 8714 A S Walsh, Wardmaster as opposed to 5714 Hall.

Norrell, which seems correct on the download nominal roll seems to be Norvill in the diary.

Marilyn

I have quite a few CCS diaries and think it's fair to say 44CCS is one of the better ones. It's written well with legible handwriting,  in pencil.

Detail wise I would say - lots! Many individual's names given for both staff, patients and temporary staff EG PB men. Original contingent of nurses mentioned and replacements as and when they arrived.

Occasionally even an OR gets a few lines of text if there's something unusual. German patient Willy Hoppe had membranous tonsillitis and a swab taken by 13 Mobile Lab!

A new CO took over in Nov 1916 and the writing style changes but detailed entries continue. By mid 1918 I'd say the level of detail is tailing off and writing getting worse but in Sept 1919 things pick up again with lots of names. Even the odd VAD mentioned.
