4th London Field Ambulance /47 London Div

My Grandfather Joe Metcalfe D/S/5121 RND Engineers was under special instruction of CRE 47 Division on the 18th June 1916 when he was wounded by a rifle grenade. His RND records show that he was in the care of the 4th London Field Ambulance and the with hospital list number H.A.297 he was admitted to the 2nd Canadian Stationary Hospital Outreau. My questions are;

 

1 Did Field Ambulances maintain a War diary and where could I find it?

 

2 Does anyone know the location of the 4th Field Ambulance on 18-6-1916?

 

I'm visiting the area in August .I have a fair idea of where he was wounded but any additional information would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi Sapperwho,

 

The diary is here at the National Archives, or here on Ancestry. On 18th June 1916 they were based at 'Fosse 10', with an Advanced Dressing Station in Bully Grenay. The diary entry for the day only refers to two officers re-joining the unit.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I visited Bully Grenay about 15 yrs ago but the children were just toddlers. This time I hope to get a clearer idea of the place. I bought the WD from the NA .On the 17th the 4th London Field Ambulance were giving instruction to the medics of the Royal Naval Division just as the 47th CRE was instructing the RND Engineers. Passing on lessons learnt.
