Remembered Today:

Captain A F Hayward - Malay States Guides

Recommended Posts

Save my sanity - researching some officers of the MSG in Aden and have drawn a blank on first names for Capt. Hayward - perhaps he was christened AF...

I've got a suspect, Alfred Francis Hayward, born 1876 in Cheltenham, who has pre-war service papers. He was an Armourer Staff Sgt with the Gloucestershire Regiment and served in South Africa, Hong Kong, Singapore and India prior to January 1914, when he was A.O.C attached Middlesex.

Some records on the Jersey Archives website - http://catalogue.jerseyheritage.org/collection/Search/archive/alfred francis hayward/

That certainly looks like a good fit. Nothing about the Connaughts though... Must be 1920s 'fake news'. Great archive from Jersey - Hayward was moved to Germany in 1942 but survived and died Jersey in 1949...

Thank you for a great tip IPT!

Here's your link to the Connaughts and a bit more detail on his service. Certainly the right man. Interesting he was also at the Mutiny in Singapore 1915, subject of another current thread.

This extract from Service record on FMP highlighted by IPT above

Simon, if you haven't done so already, look at the StraitsTimes archives (Singapore Govt Newspapers).
