Langdon Posted 5 June , 2017 Share Posted 5 June , 2017 According to Forum member Craig's invaluable gratuity calculator, Alfred enlisted in or around March 1915. Mike

RFA, Hilsea on 17-09-15 Albert was between these, therefore March 1915 is a little too early in my estimation.
ss002d6252 Posted 5 June , 2017 Share Posted 5 June , 2017 His war gratuity was paid for 34 months so if the RA number was allocated in Aug/Sep 15 he had 5-6 months or so service prior that under another number. Craig

charlie962 Posted 5 June , 2017 Share Posted 5 June , 2017 (edited) War Diary (link is to Ancestry) for that day says: C/170 shelled by 8" Howitzer during afternoon. 1 direct hit on signallers dug-out killing 1 NCO, 4 men. The war diary also has names for these casualties, incl ARJ Clark Charlie Edited 5 June , 2017 by charlie962
Dragoon Posted 5 June , 2017 Author Share Posted 5 June , 2017 You're a star Charlie, thank you so much for the information! Greatly appreciated. I didn't think of looking at the Wyke Regis memorial. Thanks again Chris
Dragoon Posted 6 June , 2017 Author Share Posted 6 June , 2017 Thank you again Mike, David, Craig and Charlie for your input on this one. Just read the War Diary, its quite moving knowing how Alfred died, sat in his dug out with 4 others, talking, smoking, trying to keep warm. Next second, gone. I looked up on find a grave .com and found a photo of Alfred's grave in the Orchard dump cemetery. What was quite moving was that the four soldiers Alfred died with and are listed on the war diary, are buried side by side with him, lump to the throat! Thanks again Chris
Dragoon Posted 15 January , 2020 Author Share Posted 15 January , 2020 Hello good people of the forum. Just coming back to my old post here, as I'm printing off some docs regarding this soldier. I've just taken on board he died aged 19. Craig's calculator has him enlisting in March 1915! So he must have lied about his age. Shame his records haven't survived, it would be interesting to see what DOB he had given. Cheers all Chris
Dragoon Posted 16 January , 2020 Author Share Posted 16 January , 2020 I wonder, if possible, if someone could please check I read Alfred's war gratuity correctly. I haven't at the moment a means to check it myself. Thank you in advance for your time. Chris
