Simply unacceptable behaviour. I its against the rules to even speculatevon the type of councillors who would even speculate such action. Even plague victims uncovered by Crossrail excavations are getting greater consideration.

CWGC line is that:

"The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) has agreed with the London Borough of Southwark that: no war graves will be disturbed during the planned works at Camberwell Old Cemetery, that no burials will take place above the war graves and that we will be able to mark graves which were previously inaccessible.  We only have responsibility for the war graves and these have all been identified and will not be affected by the works."

What am I missing?

The CWGC line is reassuring but at variance with the statement by the Friends of the Cemeteries

"The war graves in ‘Area Z’ of Camberwell Old Cemetery are among 48,000 graves in this one public (often called ‘paupers’ ) burial area. They are buried in graves up to 18 deep. There are 131 war graves in the cemetery, in total.

Southwark will shortly be mounding over most of these graves with construction waste and will lay concrete for roads and embankments to create 700 ‘new’ private plots. They have asked the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) to mark only 25 of the 48 graves with headstones - the 23 being under roads and embankments. Marking these war graves would entail Southwark changing the development."

Or am I missing something?

Interesting that the Tank Corps casualty has a service number of 38009 and, according to his MIC, was KIA

Just received this email regarding the above:

Remembrance Saturday, 2pm 11th November, Camberwell Old Cemetery:

Ceremony to remember the WW1 and WW2 British military and civilian war casualties in Southwark’s Cemeteries who are being built and buried over.

23rd October 2017

www.savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk/war-graves

Southwark Council is building new burial over the graves of WW1 and WW2 military casualties and civilian casualties, including Blitz victims.

Right now, at least 37 graves of WW1 soldiers are being mounded over. There are scores more in the cemetery who are next.

Southwark’s goal is to sell off ‘new’ burial plots over their graves. We want Southwark to stop - in respect for the dead buried here.

Would you be interested in joining us to remember the unremembered, 2pm-3pm Saturday 11th November at Camberwell Old Cemetery to commemorate all the victims of war buried here and show your disapproval of Southwark Council’s actions?

Please let us know if you would be interested in attending:

Please also ask the press to report on this event and Southwark’s serious disrespect for the dead in their cemeteries. We would ask you to contact Southwark Council but they don’t seem to be listening.
