michaeldr Posted 24 May , 2017 Share Posted 24 May , 2017 Alas, my photograph of this headstone has not come out too well The inscription reads as follows: Nathan Benjamin served as CH/575(S) Private RMLI Chatham Battn. RND 12 July 1915 Age 19 In loving memoryof my dearly beloved son Visiting Gallipoli off and on for nearly 20 years this marker has always been incomplete (no alias) and with an error (wrong age) http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/604817/BENJAMIN, NATHAN The CWGC say that their records show it to have been corrected and replaced in 2004, however this must also be a mistake Nevertheless, my thanks to the CWGC this morning for their prompt reply to my enquiry and their assurance that it would finally, actually, be replaced sometime within the next 24 months. They have also promised me a photograph of the new headstone when the work is complete. Not Forgotten
michaeldr Posted 24 May , 2017 Author Share Posted 24 May , 2017 (edited) My memory is letting me down these days This casualty and his marker have of course, been noted before (2008 & 2012) see I hope that today's email from the CWGC does indeed signify that this will at long last be put right I shall be grateful if GWF Pals visiting Gallipoli in the next couple of years can keep an eye on this for us Edited 24 May , 2017 by michaeldr
Phil Wood Posted 24 May , 2017 Share Posted 24 May , 2017 Not the greatest photo - a bit skewed - which somehow seems appropriate.
michaeldr Posted 25 May , 2017 Author Share Posted 25 May , 2017 (edited) Thanks Phil; that's a much better photograph May I repeat my request given above: If any Pal is visiting Skew Bridge in the next two years then please keep an eye open for the new headstone to Private Nathan Benjamin We don't want him to slip through the net again Not Forgotten Edited 25 May , 2017 by michaeldr
michaeldr Posted 14 May , 2018 Author Share Posted 14 May , 2018 (edited) Well, I must admit to being very disappointed by this Adding the words “Alias Line of Jack Davis” does not, to my mind, show the respect which is due here. I can only hope that this is the CWGC's idea of a temporary step, until a new headstone can be cut Edited 16 May , 2018 by michaeldr

Once engraved the marker will be shipped to Gallipoli and extremely (sic) installed.
