Hi

Can someone help me find these RGA war diaries, if they are on Ancestry-

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/3b7fcef716d644179605e862a1c0e994

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/da4072bd8a894623b98e1422a764e34c

If you know of any others for 146 and 128 Heavy Batteries between 1916 and 1919 please also let me know.

regards

Robert

The Information on the Ancestry page for "UK, WWI War Diaries (France, Belgium and Germany), 1914-1920"  http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=60779 is that the War Diaries are from WO 95/1096–3948.

Both the records you quote above are outside this range  (WO 95/466/4, WO 95/216/11) so I assume will not be available on Ancestry.

Cheers

Maureen

This range refers to the diaries of Divisions and their constituent units. RGA batteries were Army Troops and have been digitised, and should be available on the National Archives website at about £3.50 each.

Be aware that most battery diaries were discontinued at the beginning of 1918, when Brigades RGA replaced Heavy Artillery Groups (HAG). After that date the activities of the batteries were recorded in the Brigade diaries.

Hi Ron

Thanks for that, so with the Brigade diaries, how do I find 146 and 128 Heavy Batteries in them?

regards

The allocations of Heavy Batteries (and Siege Batteries, ASC units and lots more) are listed in a file numbered WO95/5494 at Kew.

This gives the brigades/HAGs that individual Heavy or Siege batteries were allocated to, and the dates thereof.

Unfortunately I don't have copies of Heavy battery allocations, and this file is not available to download.

However I'm sure some RGA experts will know this information and will post it here shortly.

Here are the War Diary references for the brigades. You will note that battery diaries before 1918 appear in the same boxes.

WO 95/466 9 Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery 1915 Apr. - 1918 Dec.
WO 95/466 128 Heavy Battery Royal Garrison Artillery 1917 Aug. - Nov.

WO 95/216 16 Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery 1915 May - 1919 Feb.
WO 95/216 146 Heavy Battery Royal Garrison Artillery 1916 Dec- 1917 Feb, May
I don't know whether separate battery diaries for 1918 were maintained within the brigade diaries, or whether the brigade diaries simply reported the activities of all their batteries, in a consolidated form.

Ron-Slightly off the mark- but I seem to miss war diaries when I look- Would your wisdom isolate where a war diary would be for 2/2 Divisional Ammunition Column, 150th Brigade RFA 1916 and 1917 (Yes -I know this is RGA thread -I am just ignorant)

The limited number of diaries that I've seen do not have separate battery diaries after 1/1/1918 (approx).

Yes (again with above proviso).

I'm not sure what you mean by "2/2 Divisional Ammunition Column." The only obvious subject seems to be 60th (2/2 London) Divisional Ammunition Column, but this does not seem to have any connection to 150 Brigade RFA which was in 30th Division, a New Army division raised mainly in the North.

The relevant War Diary references are as follows.

30 DIVISION
WO 95/2316 Commander Royal Artillery 1915 Nov. - 1916 Dec.
WO 95/2317 Commander Royal Artillery 1917 Jan. - 1919 Mar.
WO 95/2321 148 Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1915 Nov. - 1919 Feb.
WO 95/2321 149 Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1915 Nov. - 1919 Apr.
WO 95/2321 150 Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1915 Oct. - 1916 Dec.
WO 95/2321 151 Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1915 Nov. - 1916 Aug.
WO 95/2321 Divisional Ammunition Column 1915 Sept. - 1918 Dec.

60 DIVISION  (2/2 LONDON)
WO 95/3026 Commander Royal Artillery 1915 Apr. - 1916 Nov.
WO 95/3027 300 Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1915 June - 1916 Aug.
WO 95/3027 301 Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1915 June - 1916 Nov.
WO 95/3027 302 Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1915 Oct. - 1916 Nov.
WO 95/3027 303 Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1915 Apr. - 1916 Nov.
WO 95/3027 Divisional Ammunition Column 1916 June - Nov.

SALONIKA:
60 DIVISION  (2/2 LONDON)
WO 95/4926 Commander Royal Artillery 1916 Dec. - 1917 June
WO 95/4927 301 Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1916 Dec. - 1917 June
WO 95/4927 302 Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1916 Dec. - 1917 June
WO 95/4927 303 Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1916 Dec. - 1917 June
WO 95/4927 Divisional Ammunition Column 1916 Dec. - 1917 Jan

One of the annoying peculiarities of the index to class WO95 is that for certain divisional and brigade units do not specify the number of the division or brigade, and DACs are a good example of this.

Does anyone know where the War Diary for 150 Brigade RFA for 1917 is? I believe they were Army Troops.
