I made my first visit to the Western Front battlefields recently. I saw this item lying by the side of a road between Guillemont Farm and The Knoll, in the approximate location of Lone Tree Trench. I think it's part of an entrenching tool. Can anyone confirm or correctly identify it? Thanks in advance.

Looks like a rusted spade to me...

Need to know its size really, but from the shape it could be a German one.

Thanks for the responses so far, here's a pic for size comparison. The book is 21.5cm tall by 13.5cm wide.
