depaor01 Posted 8 March , 2017 Share Posted 8 March , 2017 (edited) Afternoon all, Latest local casualty I'm researching is 15176 John Nolan of the 49th Bty 40th Bde., Royal Field Artillery. On Ancestry I have downloaded what I hope is the correct diary (43112_1400_0-00319) containing actions on the day he was killed - 12th October 1917 at Ypres. I have the Trench Map CD and am trying to locate an approximate area to pinpoint his last movements. At the start of the relevant page it is written "We have retired slightly from VIENNA COPSE to conform with the brigade on our flank" Could anyone point me to a map that would show the location of Vienna Copse? The search facility on the CD doesn't recognise it and mentions online are sparse. Thanks in advance, Dave Edited 8 March , 2017 by depaor01
charlie2 Posted 8 March , 2017 Share Posted 8 March , 2017 Could it be Vienna Cott, it looks like a copse on the map http://digitalarchive.mcmaster.ca/islandora/object/macrepo%3A66727/-/collection square D12.c and d Charlie
depaor01 Posted 8 March , 2017 Author Share Posted 8 March , 2017 Thanks Charlie, It's a plausible theory that the war diary has an incorrectly named feature. That would account for the fact that there is hardly any mention of "Copse", but quite a few of "Cott" in the "Extensive Library". I'd run with that if the 49th Bty 40th Bde were in the area on the 12th of October. Dave
