I'm off balance here when it comes to OR research; could anyone confirm if his service papers are around? I think he left before 1914.

Thanks!

Looks like he arrived at Friedrichsfeld P.O.W. camp on 4 October 1914

Repatriated, arriving at Dover on 28 November 1914

Edit to add:- no service records seen on ancestry.co.uk

Hi,

It doesn't appear that James has surviving service papers.

His service number would appear to date from 1904/05 - see here. In the 1911 census he may have been in India, at that time with the 1st Battalion.

Regards

Chris

Thank you all for this. Admittinly this query was for an acquaintance outside the forum from Ireland who has tendered his thanks. I learned quite a bit here. Out of interest, are the OR's records of the RMF's mostly lost?

Hi

I am currently researching another Munster Fusilier who was also taken POW at Etreux.

Frustratingly information on him is virtually non-existent.

There are no service papers on either Ancestry or FMP.

As an experiment I took details of many other men taken POW there who had enlisted around the same time - going by their

service numbers - I found papers for none of them.

It may be just coincidence that all these men's files fell victim to the Luftwaffe or there may be another reason why the papers

have disappeared.

I have also found it extremely difficult to find information on the Etreux RMF POWs. However, any information that I have found has been in local newspapers and I have gathered all of this into my book https://www.amazon.co.uk/LAST-ABSOLUTION-Royal-Munster-Fusiliers/dp/1973208253/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8
